My 9yo DS2 wants me to buy a Eminem album for him. I have no qualms about buying a record but apparently this artist is quite sexist and chauvinistic in his lyrics. Is it a suitable present and is this artist sexist?

His new album hasn't been released yet. I'd have no problem letting a 9 yo listen to his albums. The older stuff is better.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 24/07/2013 18:17

Which album?

Why don't you look up the lyrics and see if you're happy with it?

Eminem for a 9yo? Nonononono. Violence against women, swearing, drugs- it's not music for children. I'm only familiar with the older stuff, but I doubt he's changed much.

Hassled · 24/07/2013 20:45

You'd let a 9 year old listen to Stan? Really? Much as I love Eminem, he's not for children.

Secretswitch · 24/07/2013 20:47

He is a very clever artist. I understand he suffered abuse at the hands of his mum. Misogyny is rampant in many of his songs. I can get past he swearing, but not lyrics like " I told Nate you was a slut. I hope you don't mind, but I told him you like from behind"

NiceTabard · 24/07/2013 22:06

Depends on the songs, surely.
Have a listen / look at lyrics and see what you think.
That's the only way to do it.
I liked eminem when I was young, have been uncomfortable with some of his subsequent stuff. No way of knowing except finding out first hand.

Meglet · 24/07/2013 22:11

Not for a 9yo.

I have some Eminem cd's and need to hide them before the dc's start rummaging.

Artijoke · 24/07/2013 22:20

I wouldn't let my kids listen even though I used to listen to a lot of Eminem.

In track he kills his wife. Its violent stuff.

Artijoke · 24/07/2013 22:21

Oops proper link to track lyrics

JaquelineHyde · 24/07/2013 22:29

I love Eminem's music and have done ever since his first album. However, I would not allow a 9 year old to listen to his music.

OctopusPete8 · 24/07/2013 23:10

I was listening to eminem at that age,

DizzyZebra · 25/07/2013 20:13

I like Eminem, But i think 9 is a bit young for a lot of his stuff. Most of it is tongue in cheek and not meant to be taken seriously but i'm not sure it would be obvious to a child.

Why don't you have a listen to some of his songs on youtube and then you can get him a few individual tracks as a compromise?

YouMakeMeWannaLaLa · 25/07/2013 21:01

Sexist, woman hating, rape-glorifying, lots of use of 'retard', racial insults, a hell of a lot of homophobic hate-speech and simulated sex sounds.

In no way suitable for a 9 year old.

Was a big fan when I was younger, though and cannot help admiring his wordplay and the beats/melody.

Sounds amazing...content:vile.

OctopusPete8 · 25/07/2013 22:11

Just me then?

his older stuff is actually more violent etc, he mellowed slightly with his older stuff.

Just Loose actually has no swearing in if you listen.
