some interesting fact from this article: www.she-conomy.com/report/marketing-to-women-quick-facts

Women account for 85% of all consumer purchases including everything from autos to health care:

91% of New Homes
66% PCs
92% Vacations
80% Healthcare
65% New Cars
89% Bank Accounts
93% Food
93 % OTC Pharmaceuticals

American women spend about $5 trillion annually, Over half of the U.S. GDP

Senior women age 50 and older control net worth of $19 trillion and own more than three-fourths of the nation's financial wealth.

Over the next decade, women will control two thirds of consumer wealth in the United States and be the beneficiaries of the largest transference of wealth in our country's history. Estimates range from $12 to $40 trillion. Many Boomer women will experience a double inheritance windfall, from both parents and husband. The Boomer woman is a consumer that luxury brands want to resonate with. Claire Behar, Senior Partner and Director, New Business Development, Fleishman-Hillard New York

Wealthy boomer women are the marquee players in our country's culture and commerce. They are educated, have a high income, and make 95 percent of the purchase decisions for their households. Karen Vogel, The Women's Congress and co-founder and president of New Generation Event Solutions

Women and Cars

Women buy more than half of the new cars in the U.S., AND influence up to 80% of all car purchases.
*Women also request 65% of the service work done at dealerships.
Women spend over $200 billion on new cars & mechanical servicing of vehicles each year.*
45% of all light trucks and SUVs are purchased by women.

how is it that women are so oppressed and yet so wealthy at the same time? how is it that "men have all the power," and yet "Women account for 85% of all consumer purchases including everything from autos to health care". do men earn the money, whilst women spend it? isn't all this consumerism bad for the environment?

You have multiple points in your post.

I guess the main point is that women tend to have the "household" work fall to them. So for example in my household, I manage all bill payments, credit cards, car stuff, mortgage, weekly online shop, you name it. I also work full time and earn more than my DH (who works full time as well). Being responsible for household spending can be stressful, when income and expenditure are not matched. I do not see the fact that women do lots of spending as being fantastic news for them. Most of what they are buying is for others or for the household.

The article appears to have comingled this with a totally different point about a small group of wealthy women, for reasons of their own. FWIW the fact that "boomer" women get a "double inheritance" while men don't is simply evidence that women live longer than men (how lucky! to have your husband die!) and that men have more assets than women (otherwise widowers in this group would have the same effect).

So basically you are saying women are really lucky because they have to bear the responsibility of the household budget, and watch their husbands die. Lucky, lucky buggers.

Even if men do make more than women, women can't really complain because they are the ones that spend it!

grumpyinthemorning · 16/06/2013 11:03

Bloody well can complain about it, I'd prefer not to have to ask when I want to buy something! If it's my money, I can spend it as I see fit (glares at letter and mutters about car insurance).

NiceTabard · 16/06/2013 12:39

The point I'd that most of the spending women are doing is not'fun'. most people don't find stiff like trawling comparison sites to try to save a couple of quid on the gas bill 'fun', or doing the weekly supermarket shop, or passing the school dinner money.

God spelling terrible first post from phone and hasn't gone that well!

It's clear that 91% of women are NOT buying new homes with their own money or 92% of holidays. This has to refer to women's influence on spending (look at the lower, traditionally male spending areas of new cars and PCs).

This doesn't demonstrate anything about women's wealth...just as a similar survey on spending habits in pre- and young teens wouldn't demonstrate anything about THEIR earned wealth.
