Pinterest and feminism

I don't really venture onto this board at all - have a look if things pop up in active topics but I've been browsing Pinterest and wondered what people thought of some of the stuff on there.

I browse "everything" and just get rather irked by the number of "special ways to make your husband feel loved" type things for weddings and general life.

Perhaps I am just bitter and twisted but I haven't seen any similar pins/articles for how to make women and wives feel loved and I just feel it's fostering an attitude of having to please your man and look after him rather than mutual love and being looked after.

This mini-rant has been circulating in my head a bit so I thought I'd come out and post it. I suppose maybe the majority of Pinterest users are female so it's not the place to find the "how to please your wife/girlfriend" advice...

Evidently, the proportion of male users of Pinterest is increasing, and it is being used for more purposes than it's original focus on "lifestyle" images. Have a page for work and it definitely has nothing about making husbands feel loved on it! :-)

ha - yes, I have a few boards and none of them are about pleasing my husband! Perhaps that is rather neglectful of me as I do have at least 2 that are related to things to do with the children!

It's ridiculously American Conservative Christian in the main with a touch of Stepford Wives IMHO.

I find it amusing and take ideas from it ignoring the pins that don't share my views.

There are a few feminist boards. Not many granted, but a few if you search.

I am literally addicted to it though. at yet another internet addiction.

The Inspirational quote pins make me want to vomit and if I can be bothered and am bored I put a comment on the bottom to counteract all the "Yes!" and "I agree"'s.

Example: Never let the things you want make you forget the things you have" and "A successful woman is one who can build a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at her".

I haven't seen anything like that but I mostly look at home décor and fashion stuff or crafty things - all v. stereotypically "girly" I know - it's true that most of the pins I've come across have been from women.

I may go and look now though!

Yes, I guess it's the American Conservative Christian Stepford Wives stuff that gets my goat a little.
And massively giant efforts going into tiny details of weddings that always makes me slightly concerned that the point of the wedding might be missed as they frantically try to find the right mason jar to artfully put lace around.

But mostly I love it! Just wondered what opinions on here might be!

Yes, the wedding stuff bugs the hell out of me, but I'm not massively into detail - my wedding favours were chocolates in a bag 'cause who doesn't love chocolate they were cheap and easy

I love the home decor and DiY/craft pages, but hate the 'young women need to know this ' and 'show this to your husband'. If I want to reprint them I re-write them!

My wedding was actually blogged by a major American wedding blog (my photographer submitted it to them, not me!) and as a result it is all over Pinterest I must admit I've never come across the 'how to please your conservative American husband' stuff though. Probably because my feed is just filled with pictures of food!

Oh geez. For research purposes I just started randomly searching. On a page called 'Being a good wife' I found a pin all about sell by dates for fresh produce .

I think that Pinterest does have a certain 'how to be a great housewife' vibe, but I think the reason that there's nothing along the lines of 'how to please your wife' is mostly due down to the fact that the majority of its users are women. I'm a big fan of Pinterest though so perhaps I'm biased and don't want it to present a feminist issue!

I hate those things, on Pinterest, facebook or wherever; but what really bothers me are the 'how to teach your child the bible' ones, but that's not a feminist issue so apologies for diverting.
