I read that whilst feeding dd2 (4 months). Not the best idea.

It would have been a feminist issue at the time though I think. If the fathers of illegitimate children had to be responsible for the child and/or the mother was allowed to be educated and/or earn her own money, then the mothers wouldn't have been in that impossible position which allowed the baby farmers to operate.

There was a thought provoking quote on call the midwife last week, something like "are babies more valued nowadays because they have a better chance of surviving, or do they survive because they are more valued?"

Probably both. I think it's the best reason for making sure women everywhere get proper reproductive rights; being able to give more to the children that you do have is the best way of securing their survival and yours, IYSWIM.
