Anyway, they are mostly hairless. I am more aware than ever that this has become the norm and I really don't want to conform but I'm struggling not to feel like I'm - I don't know - different, radical, old fashioned, or just plain lazy and scruffy, because I don't remove the hair from my genital area. I'm just me. I want to feel happy just being me. But I don't feel happy right now - I feel - lazy and scruffy.

Please talk me down from my ridiculous moment of self-doubt.

No, you are natural and sensible as far as I can see. I'm 31 and shave nothing fwiw. Pubic hair is there for a reason. It is not vestigial.

If you want to get rid of it because you don't like it and you prefer the way it feels, fine. But it is neither lazy nor scruffy to leave it as is. In fact, I think I read here that medical professionals are seeing a rise in infections in that area due to the prevalence of the hairless look. So as I said, I don't think you are lazy; I think you are being quite sensible.

Plus, think of it this way, if you leave that bit alone, the time you'd spend on maintenance can be spent doing other more enjoyable things like MNing for example.

The thing to remember with things like that is that it is biased towards the kind of people who are happy to have pictures of their vaginas on the internet. I suspect the majority of people will trim at most, I don't think totally hairless is actually as prevalent as it at first appears.

Nothing lazy or scruffy about having pubic hair!

Only remove it if you want to, don't do it because you think you should.

Whether we are lazy or not is not determined by the state of our pubic hair. It's determined by whether we get up and do things, or spend all day lying around. (Health permitting of course.) Also I don't think there's anything morally wrong with laziness, as long as we're not hurting anyone else.... okay I've got way off topic now.

As for unshaved pubes being scruffy, it's a patriarchal cultural judgement, not a fact. You can't 'tidy' a human body, human bodies aren't a nice straight shiny pile of metal blocks, they're strangely shaped lumpy things with limbs and noses and toes and different colors and textures. Saying a hairless vagina is tidier than a hairy one is like saying a pavement is tidier than a tree. Neither is tidier, they're just different things. If hair was actually bad, women would shave their heads too, and I don't see that on the catwalk much.

This is a bit off on a tangent.......but never thought of that before mmmarmite ! Hair is becoming increasingly unacceptable everywhere on a woman except on the head where it is actually the other way round - no hair on a woman's head is seen as horrible and the longer it is the more "feminine" it is considered. I wonder why this is? Why isn't the hair on the head consdered, dirty or scruffy?? How odd!

I posted that link on the other thread, it certainly wasn't intended to incite self doubt in anyone, I apologise if it felt that way to some readers. In context it was regarding the thread about labia and to highlight and almost celebrate the individuality of the female form.

No I don't feel better without hair. If I shave doen there (have tried it once) I get a nasty rash. I also hate how it looks without hair. I just didn't realise how normal it's become (and conversely how unusual to not shave it).

But is it really becoming normal? Yes, in porn stars, maybe. But the rest of us? I never see another naked woman, and the only woman who sees my vagina is the smear nurse, once every three years. So how do we know "everyone" is doing it?

If there are any smear nurses posting here, I'd be interested to know, as they see women of all ages, whereas midwives, for example, just see women from a much smaller age range.

Nobody's putting a razor anywhere near my sensitive bits unless it is absolutely necessary for life-saving purposes. They're not putting a camera anywhere near it either, for that matter, unless they pay a very large amount of money.

I am a nurse in a theatre that does lots of gynae surgery and I can confirm it is becoming quite common to see shaved genitals in women. I have noticed it tends to be younger women generally though, say 40s and below.
Personally I prefer the feeling of being shaved as it feels breezier iyswim. Often though I don't get round to shaving that often. If I particularly worried what my DH thought on the subject, (I don't) he couldn't give a toss if it was shaved or not.
I do worry though that with the access to porn images that young men and women have these days, it will be deemed abnormal or somehow dirty to have genital hair. It is troubling to me that women are having to conform to someone elses idea of normal and sexy.

I spotted this website the other day and was a bit at the number of baldy vaginas on there.... but when I thought about it I came to much the same conclusion as Murder Of Goths.

I met someone who is a nurse in a GP practice who carries out people's smears, and she said she is phobic about pubic hair and thinks it's horrible. Made me quite .
I don't remove mine - ditto nasty rash being the main issue - it is clearly not meant to be removed - and besides that, I can't be arsed.

With a judgemental attitude like that she shouldnt be doing that job Majestic.
Ok she may not say anything to the patient about her "phobia" but im sure at least some would be able to tell. Body language can speak louder than words at times.

Haha glad i didn't click on that link at work, It's an open plan office and i've got large double monitors too! It reminds me of something from Razzle magazines readers wives section. (Notice some of them have included full photos of themselves, not just their bits.)

I don't think removing pubic hair is exclusive to women though. A number of my male friends have admitted that they trim their pubes, to the point that i appear to be in the minority who doesn't. I even asked my OH if she would like me to trim mine but she said definitely not, although she goes for a 'Hollywood' herself. So I don't think i will be investing in some Veet for men anytime soon.
