I always thought Bristol was one of the better universities too.

The University should prevent them from using its name - that was my initial thought on hearing this. Guess it's not a million miles away from the church's own stance on women though so shouldn't be a surprise.

Seems very inclusive to me, kowtowing to bigots.

Honestly? I'm not overly suprised - the bible does say women shouldn't teach, so Christianity is inherently bigotted isn't it? I think most Churches/groups just skim over this bit and pretend it doesn't exist.

I thought it was rubbish and a pretty lousy interpretation of the Bible. Paul says a lot of things, but someone on the other thread pointed out he says women should cover their heads when speaking in church, which kind of contradicts his other passage (and he's not writing to the same sets of people IIRC) about not speaking in church.

I am shocked it's Bristol and wonder (cynically) how much this has to do with students. Apparently this is 'progress' since until seven years ago they didn't let women teach at all. Now, seven years is usually like two and a half generations in student-time, and I'm surprised if the same people would still even be around, unless perhaps they're not actual undergrads but people loosely connected to the university who run it and hope to rope in students?
