I guess what I find difficult to articulate to people is why I think feminism still has battles to fight, especially when it comes to "jokey" comments people make about women that either perpetuate gender prejudices or undermine women. Things like the prortrayal of women on tv and stuff like that.

I'd love to hear how other people respond when told that "women are equal now (more or less)"

That's a great article.

I'd add something about expectations in terms of appearance. (wearing make up etc)

And today the old farts in the synod are wrestling with their consciences over the outrageous suggestions that women should be allowed to be bishops.

But hey ho, women are equal now (more or less).

As to how I respond - no one who knows me would ever dare say that to me because they would find themselves chewed up and spat out before they had time to draw breath.

On the very few occasions that strangers have made that point, or similar, I simply say I don't converse with zombies from medieval times who have clearly been dug up and allowed to walk the earth in the 21st century. Then I walk way.

perhaps educated women are equal and that requires a relatively comfortable background most of hte time.(providing they marry somebody who meets them half way with childcare and values their career as much as his own)

uneducated women aren't equal for two reasons 1) they have babies and earning potential+childcare = not very 'equal' and 2) traditionally male jobs like postman are still paid better than childcarer, healthcare assistant...

Good question. I have put my children's names down for a few private schools five years ago, and the letters come addressed to Mr Mister. My mother used to griped about that 30 years ago and they're still doing it. The local convent and the local comprehensive managed to address the letters correctly. There is no mister mister! The bank drafts for the deposits had MY name on it and they still sent back a letter addressed to a man who has fuckall to do with the price of fish. What a waste of money! I wish I could get it back. bah
