Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So what do you all think of the feminist group "Femen"

It's a Ukranian feminist group whose protests involves going topless in public then screaming and pretending they are being raped when the police take them away. I won't post any links but plenty can easily be found from a quick Google search.

One of their favourite things to protest is sex or porn. Kindof ironic how they are protesting about porn while producing softcore porn in the process?

My 2 cents.. I notice all the feminists who go topless are all young, slim, and attractive. Is that because they know if they kept their clothes on or had overweight or old members noone would give them a 2nd look? What message does this give to women? If you want anyone to give you attention and listen to you have to be good looking and have your boobs out?

I have never heard of them but doesn't sound good.
Screaming and pretending to be raped??? wtf, how does that help women? we already have enough difficulties with the way people think women been raped could be making it up etc, without groups going around and doing this. It's not something to pretend about, that pisses me right off and I agree with your point as well

I googled Femen and rape and found their protest about the gang rape and murder of a Ukrainian girl earlier this year but nothing about them accusing police. Could you post the links you mention? Thanks.

Are they having any impact?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 22/07/2012 00:02

Femen. There was an article about them in the Sunday Times Magazine a few months ago, they are apparently RadFems with a different way of attracting attention to their cause.

LynetteScavo · 22/07/2012 00:20

Just because they are topless, doesn't mean they are creating soft porn....Hmm

And yes, it's usually young, attractive feminists who tend to not remove body hair/wear a bra/ wear makeup so this doesn't surprise me.

Sounds like they are being ironic if you want my tuppence worth. Basically screaming at the men "if all it takes for you to take notice is a pair of tits..here are some tits..and now that we have your attention.....{bring on political message}". They are simply taking ownership of the way advertising uses naked women to get male attention and using it to their own ends.

Consuelaa · 11/09/2012 00:48

So what you are saying is the only way women can get their message across is if they are young attractive and have their tits out?

FrameyMcFrame · 23/09/2012 22:20

There is article about this on the Guardian website today, it's the most viewed article of the day... is that because the readers all care out the message or because they want to see the tits?
Reading the comments below it becomes clear.

Unfortunately, alongside the 'no more page 3' campaign it's quite hard to follow the logic. It's confusing.
Is it awful or empowering or degrading?

Femen are about equal rights in their home country and they have had a significant impact there especially highlighting the sex trade and the negative sex tourism that is connected to football. Where I lose all support for them is the increase in Islamaphobic activities linked to Femen cells located in other countries. Its becoming a worrying trend. I've talked to several and what bothers me is the lack of understanding that they have of Eastern cultures and Islam itself. It saddens me to think that feminists in Islamic countries may find their work tarnished or set back by such activities.
