The EU has spent actual money on a campaign designed to interest girls in science.

this is the result.

Might be better to go to the Facebook page here and add a comment to the growing pile of disdain on there.

Besides that, MrJudgeyPants, I don't know how appropriate it is to salivate over women on a women's rights thread.

Bit grim.

I have never seen this on a YouTube offering before. Who says feminism isn't working? Grin

ariadne1 · 22/06/2012 14:42

It looks like something more designed to lure men into science!!

yellowraincoat · 22/06/2012 14:42

I know garlicbum, I am heartened to see so many people - women AND men - seeing this sort of thing for what it is.

tumbleweedblowing · 22/06/2012 14:44

DD2 wants to be a scientist. Well, wanted to be one. If this is the way they expect girls to behave, she'll tell them to take a running jump.

Thumbwitch · 22/06/2012 14:49

Holy fucking crap, that is appalling. Truly appalling. It's like saying "Legally Blonde" would get more women to go into law.

Urgh. FWIW, I worked in science labs for 10y + and have always been good at maths and science and that shit wouldn't have worked on me at all - but then I'm not the target demographic, am I. My sister might be - much more girly, into pink, fashion, high heels etc. - hated maths and science etc. and hey, guess what - this wouldn't have worked on her either, because it DOESN'T ACTUALLY SAY ANYTHING REALISTIC!! Because she doesn't look like a contestant on XYZ's Top Model competition (or whatever that particular brand of trash tv is called) and isn't prone to wearing 6" heels around the place.

Just urgh on so many levels.

thechairmanmeow · 22/06/2012 14:50

the video it'self is unbeliveably bad.

i suppose the thinking behined it is that they want to attract all types of women to science, i doubt it was aimed at feminists. but in any case it failed terribly.

ziptoes · 22/06/2012 14:53

Holy freaking shit - check this out...

ec.europa.eu/commission_2010-2014/geoghegan-quinn/multimedia/photos/index_en.htm#g20120621_02

.... they actually put skinny models in bubbles to promote women in science - god I wish I had done science now.

Erm, except I did. And I'm now a prof. And got here despite the actual increase in sexism since I was a girl.

p.s. I got sent the link to the video by one of my (male) PhD students who was so outraged he had to come and have a blether about it, and is now sending me twitter updates. Do the EC realise that they have single-handedly stopped scientists across the globe (of both genders) from doing any useful sciency things for the whole of Friday afternoon as we all site here seething.

CailinDana · 22/06/2012 14:58

Oh my god I just realised it's Maire GQ who's responsible for this shit. I apologise on behalf of the Irish nation for producing such a braindead numpty. She wasn't a bad politician so I'm actually surprised it's her behind it.

Thumbwitch · 22/06/2012 15:05

Oo. I got removed for calling it unadulterated shit. Actually I was going to post a lot more than that but accidentally hit the CR button and bang! It posted.

Thumbwitch · 22/06/2012 15:07

Oh. Blush. No I didn't. OK then. (never used youtube/google commenty thing before, signed up especially for this)

Aboutlastnight · 22/06/2012 15:21

it's like something from The Apprentice

kickassangel · 22/06/2012 15:24

I'm pretty certain that the politicos who have to promote this thing actually have very little say in it. they may well turn up to do the talk, and be told 'this is the catch phrase, stand there' etc. But somewhere in the background is a group of people who worked with advertisers to promote this.

It is using stereotypes so relentlessly that it's just insulting to everyone.

dd is the perfect target audience for this - female, intelligent, likes science, also likes pink. And it did not appeal to her AT ALL.

Besides which, stating 'Science, it's a girl thing' just alienates everyone. So boys may well be put off by thinking they'll be made to wear pink blusher, and the catch phrase makes it sound like science isn't really a girl thing, it's really for men, so girls will also be put off.

Maybe it's really some secret alien life force trying to prevent the human race from discovering them.

kickassangel · 22/06/2012 15:26

And I'm assuming that Judgey was taking the piss, as this so definitely promotes the male gaze.

Longtalljosie · 22/06/2012 15:27

I'm loving this comment from a bloke on their FB page:

Seriously if I spent the rest of my life oppressing women in science I could not equal what you have done here.

squeaver · 22/06/2012 15:28

Thanks, dittany, I've emailed her.

Has anyone posted this outside of this board, on chat or AIBU? Just asking because it might hit a wider audience out there.

yellowraincoat · 22/06/2012 15:37

Posted in FB, on my wall and on the "It's a Girl Thing" page, Thumbwitch. A lot of people also saying what twaddle this is. It's a shame, because the other videos they have on their page are pretty cool. Interviews with scientists.

This may be an unpopular thing to mention here at this time, but you don't need to be (a) a woman; (b) a believer in the patriarchy; or (c) well versed in any feminist critique to recognise how crass and appalling this video is.

squeaver · 22/06/2012 15:40

Yes, thumbwitch, chat thread here

Could do with a bump
