The EU has spent actual money on a campaign designed to interest girls in science.

this is the result.

This is the agency which created the campaign tipik

You can find them on Twitter - @tipik

Shock
wem · 22/06/2012 12:40

It's so wrong I can't even make a guess at what the hell they were thinking. Just what?!

FundusCrispyPancake · 22/06/2012 12:41

great minds think alike...?

Grin
CailinDana · 22/06/2012 12:42

My heart sank when I watched this. I actually found it quite upsetting, which I know is silly, but it's just so awful to think of all the great female scientist I know (including my sister) being insulted so openly by an organisation who should be supporting them. So disappointing.

FundusCrispyPancake · 22/06/2012 12:42

Surely it is a joke?

I really hope so.

HumphreyCobbler · 22/06/2012 12:43

I am truly stunned. FFS.

Dropdeadfred · 22/06/2012 12:45

This looks like the failing team's video on the apprentice!!!

Quip · 22/06/2012 12:45

words fail me. Could it be any worse. Where did the EU get this money from o produce this? Was it from my taxes??

HappyHippyChick · 22/06/2012 12:52

I clicked on the link thinking "how bad can it be?". Really, really bad it turns out. That is appalling! I am Angry

exexpat · 22/06/2012 12:55

The shame is that the other videos they have made, of real female scientists, are actually worth watching. But they are being ignored in all the outrage over the 'teaser'. Could it all have been a misjudged campaign to get a bit of controversy going to pull people in? Naah, I think it was probably just a stupid and sexist advertising agency.

HecateAdonaea · 22/06/2012 13:02

what the holy hell is that supposed to be?

We want girls to like science so let's show them lipstick and shoes and lots of pink, cos that's what they're all about. Hmm oh, and parading themselves in front of the 'proper scientist' bloke at his microscope, of course.

after you with the gun, squeaver.

notyummy · 22/06/2012 13:05

Don't shoot me - I'm clutching at straws here - but do you think they tested that ad/idea in some other European countries and it actually did ok? There are some cultural differences and perhaps they genuinely thought it would be effective in some way.

But, if I am honest, I watched the whole thing like Shock. And yes to poster who reckoned it looked like a failed Apprentice attempt that you would wince at.

MsMoppet · 22/06/2012 13:09

This must be a joke. It must be impossible for anyone to think that this is acceptable.

LetUsPrey · 22/06/2012 13:11

I thought using a lipstick - a pink one of course - as the i in science really rounded the whole thing off.

Pillocks.

Kveta · 22/06/2012 13:13

nice summing up of it here

Grumpla · 22/06/2012 13:15

I read the first few posts on this thread and actually thought "How bad can it be?"

Well, I now have the answer. EXTREMELY FUCKING BAD.

grimbletart · 22/06/2012 13:16

Bloody hell!

numbertaker · 22/06/2012 13:20

I despair that you have to make everything cool and fun for kids. Life for the most part is not cool and not fun. How are this generation of 'funites' ever going to get grit and determination to suceed if everything is not fun.

yellowraincoat · 22/06/2012 13:22

Wow.

What can I say that you haven't already said? Unbelievable.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 22/06/2012 13:22

Oh.

Oh dear.

Maybe they were trying to send the message that you can be a girlie-type girl, and be into science too?

WidowWadman · 22/06/2012 13:23

But science is cool and is fun. There's nothing wrong with broadcasting that message.

Where they go wrong is that they think that "cool" and "fun" means wearing stuff which is highly impractical in a lab.

CailinDana · 22/06/2012 13:25

I agree numbertaker. It would have been far more helpful to have a video showing the realistic progression of, say, an acadmeic scientist's career - from choosing subjects at school, to arsing about at university, to agonising over a PhD and the inevitable tears and tearing out of hair that results, to finding the first job, to eventually gaining respect and recognition. I think both boys and girls tend not to know what a scientist's career involves and I think if they could show what a varied and involving career it can be that would be far more helpful than pretending it's about watching blusher fly off a brush
