link

am not usually a fan of common sense but perhaps it is prevailing to good effect here

Its probably based on the Nordic Model used in Sweden and Iceland.

strawberry17 · 25/05/2012 19:11

I live very near where this happened and yes it has improved no end.

ipswichwitch · 25/05/2012 19:48

glad to hear things are improving there, however i did read the thread title and thought i must have done something noteworthy without even realising!!

dancingmummy · 25/05/2012 19:51

I read the thread too thinking "well there's a sentence you don't usually hear!"
(also from Ipswich)

surroundedbyblondes · 25/05/2012 19:55

Ipswich born and bred too, though no longer living there. Great to read this, and good for the town to get its reputation back again!

Alameda · 25/05/2012 20:52

hello Ipswich people, from just down the road in the middle bit of Suffolk :)

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 25/05/2012 23:44

Really great what they have done there.

Would be great if they could roll this out everywhere in the UK.

dancingmummy · 26/05/2012 12:08

It is good, sad that 5 girls were brutally murdered before they opened their eyes to the problem :(

Alameda · 26/05/2012 12:26

it was a terrible time wasn't it, and was probably the start of the horrors of the whole industry clicking into place in my mind

think I was clinging to a very dated, studenty sort of liberal view of it all until then

I like how very simple things, like taking the Adult Personal columns out of the local papers have helped too - but suspect the main reason this is working in Ipswich and perhaps not so well in Sweden is the £££ spent on helping the people affected. It's no good just arresting kerb crawlers without investing in the people they exploit, you have to do both and with equal determination I think.

Did you see that 14 of the people they are currently working with in Ipswich are children? :(

OP posts:
ipswichwitch · 26/05/2012 13:05

Scary isn't it alameda
I have to say I never knew it was such a problem there until the murders happened. People were on the news saying how much the town had changed for the worse, and frankly sounded nothing like the Ipswich I left at 18 ( mid 90s)

CailinDana · 26/05/2012 13:19

You know it sounds a bit pathetic but IMO the best part of the article itself (besides what it's actually reporting) is that it says that Steven Wright murdered five women not five prostitutes. For once the fact that they are people comes before the fact that they are sex workers.

FeministPixie · 26/05/2012 13:38

Now ideally they need to up their game to combat off-street prostitution- theprostitutionexperience.com

In one of the posts made by FreeIrishWoman, she mentioned it got worse when in '93 the Irish government passed a law against "loitering for reasons of prostitution" that it meant that they couldn't assess the guys body language before they went with them.

Seabright · 26/05/2012 17:06

Lots of feminists on here from Ipswich & environs! (me included). Something in the water?

Did you see the TV drama "5 Daughters" when it was on? A great piece, I thought.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 26/05/2012 17:15

The 14 children with whom they are working were not necessarily prostitutes themselves, possibly the children of prostitutes.

strawberry17 · 26/05/2012 18:38

It was terrible round there ipswichwitch, I remember driving along West End road and regularly seeing prostitutes openly along that road, and residents were always complaining about how dreadful it was for them, now, it is totally different round there. I don't normally post in the feminism area at all, occaisionally in mental health and that's it, I just lurk here occaisionally Smile

Simi, have you actually read the previous posts?

Melroses · 23/10/2019 22:32

No - simi just dredged up a thread that mentioned 'ipswich' to advertise their business - Hmm

youkiddingme · 23/10/2019 22:38

Bravo Ipswich.

HorseWithNoFucksToGive · 24/10/2019 09:08

That story was from 2012.

HorseWithNoFucksToGive · 24/10/2019 09:10
