last night I watched Miss Congeniality, and squirmed from beginning to end. She only got happy and became attractive to the opposite sex once she had been made over, and became more "ladylike"

and thats without the beauty pageant aspect!

I had to turn it off in the end.

I kept huffing loudly and desperately wanted her to turn round and shout, "none of this actually matters"

tell me about it - there were some old Friends episodes on TV yesterday and all I could see were misogynistic jokes, like Joey was behaving emotionally and irrationally, meaning of course that he was turning into a woman Hmm
And everybody laughing over the ridiculous idea that Monica could ever have a boyfriend if she had not slimmed down..

God, friends irritates me so much now! I want to shake rachel and tell her to ditch the abusive, whiney ross, get some counselling and move to paris!

Hear hear. I used to love Friends 20 years ago, but frankly they ought to have stopped showing it then. I can't stand my DDs watching it- it gives them all the wrong messages. Plus there's the horrible canned laughter.

Give me Gilmore Girls any day.

It (Miss Congeniality) does at least pass the Bechdel Test. Which is a reminder that the BT is no guarantee of quality or feminist credentials, but it's depressingly infrequent that a mainstream film does pass so it's worthy of note. IIRC there is a deeply buried sort-of feminist note in Miss Congeniality (that it's wrong to assume that beautiful women are empty airheads, and that Gracie who has always rather looked down on other women in favour of being "one of the boys" learns to appreciate the benefits of female friendship) but you need to hang on for scant comfort.

Interestingly, Miss Congeniality 2 (which I caught the other day) drops the romantic angle in favour of the two female leads learning to appreciate each other.

If you look at rachels relationships, her first boyfriend had sex with someone else while he was on a date with her, barry cheated on her with her bf and wanted her as a trophy, ross was obsessed with her, kissed her while in a serious relationship with someone else, wrote that list, the whole mark thing, belittles her career (2m people saw a movie about what I do, how many would watch a film called jurassic parka?) Sleeps with someone else, constantly tries to shift blame onto her and is dismissive. Tag, she has to dump because at the grand age of 30 she needs to be with someone she will have kids with, and she's getting on. Then there's the paris thing. Her parents had a v unhealthy relationship as well.
