And your male partner/DH/DS's driving licence. The photocard ones.

Do you notice anything about the names? I noticed this the other day and it made me feel a bit Hmm

passports don't have titles

HipHopOpotomus · 10/05/2012 13:00

Wimbledon used to do this too:

Miss S Williams
cf
Andy Murray

I noticed last year they had changed to using Serena Williams - I was very happy!

Lio · 10/05/2012 13:16

Mine is Miss Lio. I didn't think I'd ever ticked the 'Miss' box, but perhaps there wasn't the Ms option waaaaaay back when I applied for my first licence.

SardineQueen · 10/05/2012 13:30

Obviously wasn't the passport office then Grin
It was some official bunch or other. Loads of threads about it on here.

DarrowbyEightFive · 10/05/2012 13:48

My German licence uses no title, and I don't think DH's does either. The problem in the UK is that Mrs is used to designate your married status, and obviously many women don't want to give that information to the wider world when men don't have to. This is not a problem in Germany - you're a Fraülein until 18 and then become a Frau whether married or not. Hence women are on the same level as men. The solution in the UK would be to adopt Ms for all adult women. Or, the DVLA could just acknowledge that whether you're married or not is not information needed on your driving licence.

grimbletart · 10/05/2012 14:08

Ah HipHop - they are only halfway there. They still say e.g. "Game Murray - Murray leads by...." but "Game Miss Williams. Miss Williams leads by...."Grin

axure · 10/05/2012 14:11

Darrowby that sounds sensible, use Miss/Ms to address women in speech depending on age, although still not totally fair because males aren't being classified by age. Also some Mrs's won't want to use Ms.

Get rid of titles altogether on documents like Driving Licences.
I'm going to make it my business to contact DVLA/DVLNI about this, my first stand for equal rights!

Eglu · 10/05/2012 14:18

I wonder why they need a womans title if a mans is not important. The title is used to show if you are married or not etc. So why does this need to be on my driving licence.

It really is ridiculous.

Kveta · 10/05/2012 14:19

mine is Dr. Kveta.

I got it changed after my dad had a run in with the police - he was driving too fast, and was pulled over (mum in the passenger seat), and mum was going 'ha, told you not to go so fast, pillock' or words to that effect. The police officer asked to see his licence, then handed it back, saying 'sorry Dr. Kveta'sDad. On you go'.

So mum was going puce with rage, as she actually is a medical professional (dad and I are not!), and has been given parking tickets when responding to medical emergencies... And dad told me to change my title everywhere I could as soon as I graduated!!

DH doesn't have a title, but his licence is foreign and weird anyway :o

wem · 10/05/2012 14:27

SardineQueen - I think that was the CRB. I was expecting problems when I had to go through them recently, but they must have fixed it as it went through fine.

My licence says Ms, DH's doesn't have a title. Grrrrrr. And I agree, I doubt it's because all the women are filling in the title section of the form and all the men are opting out.

SardineQueen · 10/05/2012 14:39

Am glad they have fixed it! I knew it was something official.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 10/05/2012 17:19

Just checked ours. DH has not title, I am Mrs, but I would never have noticed.

I would like to know why the women have titiles - bet it is something to do with a software glitsch.

boxyfoxy · 10/05/2012 17:23

my drivers license says MS Grin

DilysPrice · 10/05/2012 17:32

It's not a bloody software glitch is it. They wanted to make gender obvious on the licences and decided that the best test to do it was to put a special extra field to mark out the people who were abnormal. I suspect it's left over from decades ago - I will go and extract our (paper, photoless) driving licences from the cupboard underneath the stairs.

It's not a huge deal but it is symptomatic of treatment of women as a strange minority who need to be treated differently.

axure · 10/05/2012 18:01

Going to put a spanner in the works now, have just checked DS provisional licence and it says Mr, will look at DH and let you know.

poorbuthappy · 10/05/2012 18:09

Just checked dh's and he is name only. He's got 1 of the new holographic ones.

BikeRunSki · 10/05/2012 18:24

Mine is Dr Bike.

WildEyedAndHairy · 10/05/2012 18:31

I need to get my photo card renewed so glad I've seen this now. My licence currently says Ms MaidenSurname.

I wanted to change it to my married surname but I do not wish to be known as Mrs. To get the surname changed I have to provide my marriage certificate but I'm wondering if they will put anything if I leave the title blank. Confused

axure · 10/05/2012 21:36

DH also says Mr, so no plot to mark women as abnormal or different here in NI. No need for me to get uppitty with DVLNI after all.

TransatlanticCityGirl · 12/05/2012 23:32

Mine says Ms. :)

What happens if your day or month is 2 digits?

I looked at my UK license and it just has my name.

Then I did a quick Google and found this...

www.complicity.co.uk/blog/2010/08/dvla-foi-request-driving-licence-titles/

The blogger put in a FOI request to find out why titles (other than honorary ones) seemingly are only included on women's licenses.

It appears it's historical, no other reason for it, and that the title is only put on for a man if he holds an honorary title (Dr. or Lord for example).

If you don't complete the title field, it will just have your forename(s).

Then I remembered, I didn't fill in the title on my form. I am a 'Mrs', I don't mind being a 'Mrs' at all, but there are situations where I feel it is irrelevant to be asked what my title is. This was one of them. My marital status/title has no relevance on my ability to drive (!), so I didn't complete it.
