Hi there. I am helping to do a display of inspirational women for IWD. I have found loads of historical inspirational women. My head is exploding with them. I just wondered if anyone could nominate any younger inspirational women of today.

I know this sounds daft but I have thought of so many of the older ones I cant think anymore!!

Thanks alot.

How young?

Thistledew · 29/02/2012 21:25

Shami Chakrabarti? I know she has many detractors, but personally I think she does a great job as the director of Liberty, and she is an inspiration for me.

Thistledew · 29/02/2012 21:27

And from an older generation but living rather than historical I would nominate Helen Bamber and Baroness Hale.

LeBOF · 29/02/2012 21:28

Katie Price, successful businesswoman?

BasilRathbone · 29/02/2012 21:43

Constance Briscoe, first black woman judge, horribly abusive childhood and total success now

Not sure if young enough for you though. I think under 30 when I think young.

Finn mackay

Anna van heeswijk (sp?)

SardineQueen · 29/02/2012 22:06

What about the blue peter presenter who keeps doing ridiculously dangerous challenges? Helen Skelton is it? I've just seen a couple of bits on the news but that looks pretty inspirational and she is deffo young!

Finn mackay is super-inspirational, I heard her give a speech a couple of years ago and everyone was jumping up and down and whooping. Proper charismatic.

Agree re shami chakrabati you don't see many young women on progs like question time and she always comes across so well.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 29/02/2012 22:06

Prof Kathy Sykes OBE, one of the youngest women to become a professor?
(She's in her forties, but that's still young, right?)

SardineQueen · 29/02/2012 22:07

I say young Confused I suspect she looks very young when placed next to people like david dimbleby - I think she is prob about my age and I'm definitely not a whippersnapper!!!

SardineQueen · 29/02/2012 22:07

I think we need a definition of young Grin

SardineQueen · 29/02/2012 22:08

Charlotte church was pretty inspirational socking it to the bastard press outside court the other day.

R2PeePoo · 29/02/2012 22:14

I read a piece about this lady today.

Or this (youtube link) - Ainissa Ramirez, a Yale professor who explains simple science concepts to children from her lab.

Otherwise you could try looking here through the profiles.

More on Susan Allen's background (poor, grew up on a reservation etc)

Paula Radcliffe? UK Women's Football Team who won the World Cup a few years back (disclaimer, have little or no interest in sports but am vaguely aware that the UK women's football team have a better track record for international wins than the men's one). JK Rowling. Bidisha.

Thanks alot. By young I meant under 30. I have loads from my era (age 50+) so thanks for your help.

solidgoldbrass · 02/03/2012 10:07

Divinity Roxx who plays bass in Beyonce's band and also has a band of her own. Very talented musician, keen to inspire and encourage young girls to take up music.
