I know a lot of people on here don't like him, and don't think he's a feminist. I do, I think he's great, and this just confirms it.

I also often love Joss Whedon.

However, I did find that really patronizing/dodgy, TBH.

He's written a character who is strong and capable and who took on her sister's legal guardianship at a young age. He then has her get so drunk she doesn't know who she slept with (kerching! misogynist bingo score one), and then decide she'll have an abortion because she's so useless and incapable (kerching! misogynist bingo score two).

I dunno, I want to like him, and I think it's great he's doing a story about abortion, and it's hard to do that in a US context ... but, TBH, I was just reading that feeling depressed at how it plays into the worst stereotypes about women and sex and abortion. Sad

Though, to be fair, I do like that it sounds as if she presents her decision as a done deal to the (potential) father. That's feminist, if he handles it right.

Jericho I read your post and totally agreed with it and then thought - isn't Buffy such a good character as she is not a perfect "superhero" but a real person and real young women do get drunk and have sex and not take precautions. The fact that a character who is strong and capable and all the rest of it does that doesn't make her any less of a great person which is surely a good message?

Dunno.

Anyway. I love Buffy but I love Spike more and I think in the US to have such a cult figure supporting / utilising women's right to choose an abortion is only a good thing.

SardineQueen · 12/02/2012 08:19

And I didn't know there was a cartoon of it which is certainly interesting, my really immature and sad relative might like to know that

JerichoStarQuilt · 12/02/2012 14:17

SQ - yes, I do take your point that it's good to show superheros being weak sometimes. I just think this could backfire so much.

It'll depend a lot on how he does it.

SardineQueen · 12/02/2012 14:21

Yes

And I love Buffy so may be biased Grin

TheFeministsWife · 12/02/2012 14:25

SardineQueen I didn't know there was a comic book version carrying on the story either. My dad bought me book 1 season 8 for Christmas and I'm hooked! Just bought the rest of them off Amazon. Grin

I have been watching old season 6 yesterday and today - I like his work, don't get me wrong. I was so excited you'd started a thread as I wanted to know what other people thought. Smile
