... because I'm sick to death of men beeping their horns and yelling abuse at me. It's happened twice in the last seven days and I know it's only a matter of time before it happens again.

I'm serious considering take my chances with darkness, tripping over kerbs and cars not seeing me as I cross roads instead, thank you very much.

You need an ipod Grin Perferably with massive headphones (so they know you can't hear).

munkysea · 19/01/2012 00:22

I've got an iPod shuffle. Big headphones would be a good idea though...

i stick my ipod in and i zone out - i have no idea if any horns are beeped in my direction though i seriously doubt it....

AlwaysWild · 19/01/2012 07:38

Sorry to hear that munky. Sounds shit. I've been shouted at in that situation too. I have remembered registrations and reported to the police before and they took it remarkably seriously.

munkysea · 19/01/2012 10:59

Really? I'll have to start doing that!

I too have been in that situation. Also had some blokes squirt water all over me as they passed. Nice. In my head I can still rage about that one!

It makes me so angry because it is just bullying. If I was with DH they wouldn't say anything.

ballroompink · 19/01/2012 14:05

I get it all the time as well. I usually ignore although some culprits have got the finger on occasion. And you're right - DH runs as well and if I'm with him it doesn't happen, which does make me very angry.

sportsfanatic · 19/01/2012 14:54

Just think to yourself...there goes another knob with a very small knob....

SixtyFootDoll · 19/01/2012 14:58

I said to my DH yesterday,
' why do men beep their horns at me when I'm running? Do they think I'm going to gets my baps out for them? Or stop and give them my number?'

It's pathetic and childish, but best ignored.
I wouldn't let it stop me. I find an iPod and a 2 finger salute works for me.

OrmIrian · 19/01/2012 15:00

yes to IPOD!

I always knew when spring had sprung because running turned into a spectator sport Hmm

Don't give in and run at night. I have to as I'm at work all day and I don't much like it. I am so restricted as to where I can run.

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/01/2012 16:04

i run during the day but no one beeps me, not surprising really as i thunder along Grin

i have my ipod up loud, and i only focus on the bit of ground in front of me - that stops me thinking about how far ive got to go!

SixtyFootDoll · 19/01/2012 16:21

Yes vicar I do that, only look about six foot in front to avoid dog shit and making eye contact with van drivers.
I tend to stick to main roads as feel they are safer and also because I am less likely to stop in case someone I know sees me!

munkysea · 19/01/2012 17:15

@SixFootDoll I think it's because they want to intimidate people.

I really, really resent the fact that you can't win, though. I hate that if I do nothing they'll do it to other people, and I hate that if I do flip them off or yell something back (as I've done) they'll know they've annoyed me and got a reaction out of it.

In daylight hours i stay generally away from roads with traffic and run in the woods or on the canal path or in the park.

I fucking hate men who beep women for any reason (you don't have to be running) but I also know that men who run also get heckled, probably just as much as women (but i agree it feels more threatening for women).

yes, it happens to me. I don't want to fork out for a gym, and I do like jogging. I've resorted to running in a massive black coat Sad
Just another way that men police where women are allowed to go, and how they are supposed to behave... Men like to remind us that public spaces belong to them.

sakura · 20/01/2012 00:34

thinking about it, me wearing that massive black coat, you can kind of understand why muslim women wear the hijab. They've just had enough probably...

carernotasaint · 20/01/2012 01:49

Many years ago i was walking to our corner shop when a carload of men drove past and one stuck his head out of the window and yelled a rude comment about my weight and called me a nasty name.
Then they drove off but not before i had memorized the number plate.
Reached said corner shop and the shop assistant was as disgusted as i was so let me call the police from there.
Because if they are doing things like that they are hardly concentrating on their driving. Arseholes.

qwerty5 · 20/01/2012 01:54

Get over it. The world is full of idiots that do not behave in the way we think we should. On no account should we moderate our behaviour to accommodate them, however.

SixtyFootDoll · 20/01/2012 09:03

Agree qwerty, I run where I like, where what I want.
Yes it's annoying, but if I stop doing what I want then they win.

Katisha · 20/01/2012 09:08

Did the police follow it up carer?

Theala · 20/01/2012 09:45

I find an iPod and a 2 finger salute works for me.

This. I also find the universal sign for "you pathetic small-dicked wanker" useful in these situations.

Please don't let them stop you doing what you want to do. We have to stand up to these bullies.

sakura · 20/01/2012 10:33

I agree querty, if you replace the word "idiots" with the word "men"

Because never, in my life, have I seen a woman yell obscenities at a man who happens to be minding his own business doing some excercise...

MitchierInge · 20/01/2012 10:40

didn't want to click on this thread because I knew it would make me cross

not impressed by 'get over it' comment, why can't we shoot them?
