Hedley - you got banned from twitter? [impressed]

Quite a lot of swearing is fine here, although if you're banned from twitter I'm a bit wary of saying 'go ahead'
[impressed and a little bit intimidated]

If you have a look at the Too Many Cuts blog you can see how innoccuous it was. Especially as all the information used is in the public domain. I do hope it was Councillor Coleman himself who reported us. I'm not in the slightest bit intimidating, honest. Grin

I will not wear heels when I return to work.

kickassangel · 08/01/2012 00:27

I've just decided that I will wear more formal shoes/boots (ie a low heel) for work - cos I want to do a bit of subtle 'power dressing' & look more suitable for promotion!

I know how that sounds, but I have been wearing jeans & converse up til now so I'm not exactly talking 4 inch stillies.

OK here goes:

  1. Will value and prioritise my health by making time to exercise and improve my nutrition (hate the word "diet").
  2. Will actively seek out films and telly that pass the Bechdel Test.
  3. Will try to be a good role model to DDs, making sure they know how wonderful they are and how to be strong, resourceful, independent women (just like my mum did for me).
  4. Will continue to follow and learn from MN feminist thread. Maybe post once or twice.
outofbodyexperience · 08/01/2012 01:19

Get a freaking job. (have been rocking in the corner for 8months) even though I have been turned down for every single freaking job I've applied for in the last six months for being overqualified. Aim higher?

Finish my msc. even though it might well mean I need to restart the damned thing.

Last year was good. Thanks to the resisting compulsory fem thread I cut all my hair off. Grin I still love it.

blackcurrants · 08/01/2012 15:25

I cut all mine off too, out - and I love it too! What a thread that was!

DontCallMeFrothyDragon · 08/01/2012 15:28

Oh, here goes.

  1. I will continue to challenge my family's insistence that I "need a man"
  2. I will continue to challenge the misogyny in my family.
  3. I will continue to raise my son in a feminist manner.
  4. I will return to university in September, and graduate in 2014 as planned.
  5. I will stop beating myself up about my weight. I'm the only one who sees it as a problem.
  6. I will write more feminist inspired blog posts.
  7. I will continue buying novels for myself and picture books for DS which feature active female protagonists.

I will continue to point out and discuss misogyny in the media with my little sister.
I will discuss my parents' relationship with my mum and try to help her feel less trapped.
I will wear sleeveless tops once it's warm enough so I'm not the only one who can tell I've stopped shaving my armpits.
I will make my time off from uni as productive and enjoyable as possible.

MMMarmite · 09/01/2012 00:11

"I will wear sleeveless tops once it's warm enough so I'm not the only one who can tell I've stopped shaving my armpits."

Wow, respect. I've stopped shaving my legs for the first time and am enjoying the time and effort saved, but only because I'm wearing trousers all winter. I think when it's shorts weather I'll shave them again. I never thought I was that into conforming to beauty standards, but when push comes to shove it seems I'm not willing to step far outside them.

Lio · 09/01/2012 13:39

I've not made any NY resolutions yet but this has inspired me.

  1. I will take dd's lead and (like at least one other poster) refer to genderless toys, animals etc as she/her.
  1. I will not join in conversations where people are criticising female celebrities for things they wouldn't criticise male celebrities for.
  1. Sometimes I will even take a deep breath and point out that they wouldn't criticise male celebrities in this way.
CrunchyFrog · 09/01/2012 14:22

Loving this thread!

I will continue to fight my corner as a musician, very much the lone female most of the time.
Refuse to kowtow to the many who think it's wrong for a mother to be out playing music in pubs 4 nights a week. (none of the men get stick, most are fathers.)
Try to steer DD away from godawful pink stuff.
And I've just started the year by cutting my hair very short, SO liberating, I love it! Although a little disappointed by the number of people who have called it "cute," "pretty" or "feminine."

EquestrianStatue · 09/01/2012 14:42

Mine:

  1. Stop lurking and start posting on the Feminism topic!
  2. Challenge sexism and mysogyny in my online life - Twitter, Facebook etc - and not be afraid of doing so
  3. Quite like the 'feminist mentor' idea, I'm just 'coming out' as a feminist and like ForkInTheForeheid I find that often I don't have the info to back up my point. There are so many arguments/discussions I would love to take part in, but want my contribution to be more valuable that 'hear hear' or 'agreed' Blush
EquestrianStatue · 09/01/2012 14:43
  • *misogyny, sorry!
Lio · 09/01/2012 21:36

CrunchyFrog: when I had my hair cut super-short I was called 'sir' twice in quick succession, by someone at a coffee shop and someone who checked my train ticket Grin

CrunchyFrog · 09/01/2012 21:37

Lio Jealous!

Grin

Maybe it needs to go shorter!

HedleyLamarr · 09/01/2012 22:18

Interesting. In my last LTR my then P kept her hair really short. No4 all over. She suited it tbh.

kickassangel · 09/01/2012 22:54

I have never had hair shorter than shoulder length. I kind of like the idea that we can look however we want & don't have to have a certain style to 'count' as a feminist. There is no uniform.

OP posts:
HedleyLamarr · 09/01/2012 23:34

Hi KickAss great to see you back. I agree, there is no uniform, what and how you think and respond is what's important.

I am not a feminist. I have said this many times on MN. I am an egalitarian. To me all discrimination is wrong.

kickassangel · 10/01/2012 03:49

Though I do think about getting my hair cut short but think it can wait til I'm in my 50s or later
