One for each month of 2011, because obviously no women did anything interesting all year.

It's in the features section of the BBC news. Annoyed me immensely.

Many based on appearance, the marriages they made. One of them isn't even human.
So, who would MN put in place of a panda, a posterior and a flamenco dancing, octogenarian bride?

nativityneepsntinseltatties · 28/12/2011 06:03

Oh thanks for finding that, it isn't my ap version. One of them is a panda though Hmm

I can't believe Angela Merkel isn't on the list. Or is there another that is 'real news'?

TanteRose · 28/12/2011 06:51

three women won the Nobel Peace prize this year - not on the list? www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2011/

or Homare Sawa, who led her team to victory in the Women's World Cup

TanteRose · 28/12/2011 06:56

what about Christine Lagarde (IMF)

or even Lady Gaga??

Forbes 100 list

anyone would do to replace the frikking panda Confused

rosy71 · 28/12/2011 09:47

I don't think it's supposed to be a "people who've achieved great things" list. The men's list includes the Norwegian who shot all those people and the man in London who was shot by police. I think it'sliterally men/women who've been in the news for whatever reason.

But the list is mainly about women who have had something done to them by men - going out on a date, getting married, sexual abuse etc.

The men's list is much more though-provoking all round, about bigger issues. Although they've clearly enjoyed putting in a man who stopped Rhianna cavorting in a field.

There isn't a fucking panda on their list though!

thunderboltsandlightning · 28/12/2011 15:18

LOL at the BBC being unable to tell the difference between a woman and a panda.

A panda! I'm an animal lover and all but a panda isn't a woman and a marine who went on a date with Justin Timberlake! so thats the sum of female accomplishment this year?

solidgoldbrass · 28/12/2011 17:52

It is a bit pathetic. Surely they could have found some more women who Did Stuff.

PamBeesly · 28/12/2011 17:54

Of course they could have but they picked those women....sending out a great big message with it.... a woman who went on a date, a woman who had a barrage of media harrasment because of her bottom, a woman who was bullied into marrying a prince, a fricking panda.... very depressing

NearlyPastTheYardarm · 28/12/2011 19:12

The Forbes list linked to above is way more interesting, if a bit focused on the US. And no bleeding pandas.

vesuvia · 29/12/2011 15:55

It's depressing to think that part of the BBC licence fee funded the utter drivel in that supposed news article which claims to give details of "Some of the women who have made the headlines in 2011".

It's not even as if there was no male panda in the news at the same time as the female panda.

Why did the same writer not choose Fenton (the deer-chasing dog) for "BBC News' Man of The Month November 2011"?

Perhaps because he's a dog?

vesuvia · 30/12/2011 22:37

I've just read that there some tweets on Twitter complaining that Tian Tian (Sweetie) the female panda is an unsuitable choice to be included in what the tweeters seem to think is a list of females who made the news in 2011.

The BBC list is actually claiming to be a list of the subset of females called women.

Those tweeters are missing the point. The female panda is female, but the point is the panda is not a woman.
