This new website & magazine for girls looks brilliant

Just came across this: Moon Girls. What a brilliant antidote to all the bullsh*t our girls are fed. My DDs are always pestering me to buy them magazines and I refuse as they're all full of crappy messages. I am actually thinking of subscribing to this one despite the international postage cost. But the site itself is great too.

(I have nothing to do with New Moon btw, just stumbled on it while reading a tweet about toy advertisements, having had a chat with the DDs about gender stereotyping that very morning.)

I've been on their email list for some time now. It is very 'Amerocentric,' but does include some excellent ideas and resources.

Last time I checked, 'American Girl' wasn't bad, considering it's a mainstream magazine. It's a bit pink in places but with more positive messages and none of the crass sexualisation of magazines aimed at the UK tween female market. Those make me feel quite ill.

This might be a good place to tell you about a magazine I've subscribed to for my daughter (and I would say it's gender neutral). It's aimed at younger children than the New Moon one. It comes out every two months and it's called 'Okido, the art and science magazine for kids'.

I'm reading the PDF. It's kinda refreshing to see girls as young as nine talking about sexism!

Thanks Lio, we've come across Okido before - I think it's great but couldn't get the DDs interested in it. I guess the girls' mags in the newsagents are too seductive - hopefully New Moon will be better able to compete, as I do think something aimed specifically at girls is what they want. (Plus I love the much-needed feminist messages.)

Actually I've just had a look at it online and you're right, it is for younger kids anyway.

Had a look at American Girl, KRITIQ - not bad, definitely a more acceptable version than what's on sale in our shops. Would probably buy it occasionally if it was available here (but only when the DDs were pestering me to buy one of the ones I refuse to get!).

The other good one is Jacqueline Wilson's magazine, of course.

What's the Jacqueline Wilson one? I could get DD a mag subscription for Christmas.
