The departure of dittany

I only know that she has left, and in her post she didn't say much as to why, though some people can speculate and imagine why.

Quite a few days ago (last weekend I think) there were threads that pinpointed the lack of consideration that MNHQ has toward the sort of trolls that infest the FS section from time to time - different in nature and purpose to your average troll that infects MN from time to time.

It may well be that d. is in contact with regular posters whom she trusts. I don't know.

What I do know is that d. was a fabulous source of invigoration and illumination to a lot of posters, myself included, though we didn't always agree with her.

I would like a review from MNHQ of their current "talk guidlines" policy, in order that the FS is provided with a consideration that recognises the particular vulnerability that it experiences.

D. left for her own reasons - but this presents itself as a sort of 'test case' for MN to respond sensitively.

Would anyone agree and post here in support of this?

not bad at all i'd say.

edd1337 · 22/09/2011 08:40

Who cares? She'll soon be forgotten about. Tbh it got kinda boring looking at her posts that blamed the patriarchy for the root caues of everything

Global flood written in the bible? Blame the patriarchy
Locusts? Plague? Never existed, patriarchy is the biggest problem
Video games are stupid and for kids.... blame the patriarchy

And so on and so on

swallowedAfly · 22/09/2011 08:43

i think given the testimonies given on this thread and others by people who say dittany changed their lives and ways of thinking forever that you are wrong edd. some people genuinely engage here and apply their brains and therefore are affected.

wishful thinking me thinks.

edd1337 · 22/09/2011 08:45

All online "legends" are short-lived. Like a meme that passes

Beachcomber · 22/09/2011 09:01

I think you do care Edd because she kicked your arse often enough.

VictorGollancz · 22/09/2011 09:06

I won't forget her. She was an immense contributor to this board and it's a shame she's gone.

PrideOfChanur · 22/09/2011 09:18

Well done edd - as a non radical feminist I didn't agree with dittany on everything, and found some of her posts hard to take, but did respect her for the way she fought for what she believed in.She has changed what I think about some issues along with other posters here so I care that she has gone.
I am also one of the posters here who think men do sometime get misinterpreted and put down just because of their gender - I don't want to be treated like that as a woman,so I don't expect to treat men like that either.
So I actually thought some of the male posters in this section were getting a rough deal......

Do you plan to step up and fill dittanys shoes? Have you read much about feminism? Do you care about women who are experiencing DV or are in abusive relationships? Any relevant life experience you'd like to declare? Whether you agreed with her or not she had a big impact here, and at least she wasn't shallow.

Doasyouwould · 22/09/2011 09:27

I didn't agree with hardly anything she said.

I believe she put more women off feminism and did more for Men's rights than any MRA troll ever could.

Favourite quote of hers:

'The truth is that women create the human race and it's women who have kept it going. Men have basically acted like parasites.'

Doasy.....no woman who was serious about feminism would have been put off by dittany.

I was surprised when I read that dittany was driven off the boards by MRAs. As far as I recall most of her battles were with other feminists - usually because they didn't meet her particular standards for being a proper feminist.

I don't wish to do her an injustice and I know a lot of people found her inspirational, etc. But to me dittany was a bit too fond of making dogmatic statements, rather than trying to persuade people of her views with rational arguments backed by evidence.

As a result I believe she ended up alienating a lot of people who should have been on her side, which is a shame.

AyeBelieveInTheHumanityOfMen · 22/09/2011 12:17

Aww, your concern is touching, MisterDarsey. It seems from her flounce thread that the opposite happened more often. Her arguments were with those making anti-women statements, in the main. Is that a surprise?

MisterDarsey · 22/09/2011 12:36

I didnt read dittany's 'flounce thread', I'm just going by what I recall of her actual behaviour

I am wondering how she would define a statement as 'anti-women' - does that just mean she disagrees with it?

swallowedAfly · 22/09/2011 13:01

don't feed them fgs.

i see we've had deletions. are we getting close to the end mnhq - please please tell me we're close to the ban button.

SybilBeddows · 22/09/2011 13:09

Thing is with Dittany's influence, stuff happened in RL because of her.
Quite a few feminist groups have been set up in the last year by people who cite Dittany as a key influence in their feminist revival. These groups have then been joined by hundreds of women who have never even heard of her. And stuff has been done. Tiny, baby steps, but nevertheless, real life stuff.

SybilBeddows · 22/09/2011 13:10

last two years, sorry.

edd1337 · 22/09/2011 13:18

SAF. My posts weren't really offensive, but I suppose clicking report and putting something persuasive does the trick

AnyF · 22/09/2011 13:32

I expect EddTheball's time on MN will soon be drawing to a close

I wonder if he will get such positive affirmation when he rides off into the sunset...

"As far as I recall most of her battles were with other feminists - usually because they didn't meet her particular standards for being a proper feminist."

I think that in many cases she actually had a point. She continued to challenge the status quo. Many of us think of us of ourselves as feminists, but don't really think about or push against the inane stuff - why do we shave our legs, wear make up, have sex with our dh's when we're not REALLY in the mood etc etc.

She has "extreme" views, yes. We're not all going to fall at her feet and agree with everything. But if someone, just sometimes, THINKS about the message and changes a small aspect their thinking/behaviour because of that - well then that is a GOOD thing, surely?

Beachcomber · 22/09/2011 19:08

Mucho respect to you on this thread Porto.

ChristinedePizan · 22/09/2011 19:14

I'm with you Porto. I may be a long time feminist but there are areas where I don't agree with dittany and never have. And I have argued and told her she's too extreme and black and white as far as I'm concerned. And we've agreed to differ. She has never treated me with anything less than the utmost respect and I hope I've accorded her the same respect. Dittany may have disagreed with people quite vehemently but she was quite prepared to be challenged and as far as I'm concerned, never took it personally.

And she, among others, have been responsible for a real reawakening of my slumbering commitment to feminism and I will always be eternally grateful to her for that.
