when you engage with the trolls

. . . is it a personal thing (actually engaging emotionally) or are you communicating with a wider, more silent audience or are there other motivations?

I can't work out why more people don't ignore them, but every now and then the exchanges are unintentionally funny or interesting - although mostly it gets very dull very quickly. Wondering what's in it for them too.

Hello. For those who haven't yet seen our earlier post on this thread, it might be worth repeating the last few pars here:

While we understand how irritating it can be to see people posting in ways that you believe to be designed to inflame, we would appreciate it if you would all stick to our Talk Guidelines and report these posters to us, rather than calling them a troll on the boards or personally attacking them.

We do warn/ban posters for making posts we believe to be inflammatory but it is more difficult to follow this through when regular posters are breaking our Guidelines by attacking them in return.

Above all, we'd urge you to remember the age-old adage not to "feed the troll". An audience who won't be played is pretty dull, after all.

If you're suspicions are aroused, then please report it and move on. We promise to look into each and every report.

I said I ignore people who are thick...but didn't name anyone...how is that a personal attack ?

and yet an unsubtle hint/threat about how cunning people can easily track you down and find out who are is left standing...

But there lies another problem. What if myself and others are reported because we are percieved as trolling when we are not?

Yes, sometimes you agree and sometimes you disagree. But it is evident that this is your only area of interest in MN, which is somewhat odd.
