when you engage with the trolls

. . . is it a personal thing (actually engaging emotionally) or are you communicating with a wider, more silent audience or are there other motivations?

I can't work out why more people don't ignore them, but every now and then the exchanges are unintentionally funny or interesting - although mostly it gets very dull very quickly. Wondering what's in it for them too.

Hello all.

We'd like to address some of the points that have been made on this thread - before we all got distracted by hobnobs and manky rectal abscesses. Grin

First off, we are well aware (as many of you know from our previous posts and individual emails to you) that there are some people whose publicly declared aim is to come onto this part of MN and inflame/cause bunfights for their own merriment. And, believe us, we are doing everything in our power to spot them and stop them causing trouble.

Having said that, Mumsnet is an open forum, which welcomes discussion from those with a variety of opinions and perspective - and the Feminism section of Mumsnet is no exception to that. It is not a closed forum. Nor is a forum in which only feminists can post. If you'd like to post somewhere like that, that's fine - but Mumsnet's not the place.

Despite the recent influx of "visitors", it's not a given that, just because someone posts in the Feminism topic with a perspective/opinion that is not held by the majority of regular posters in here, that they are a troll/posting only to cause trouble. Our philosophy is and always has been to give folks the benefit of the doubt ? otherwise Mumsnet would be a much more hostile and less friendly place.

While we understand how irritating it can be to see people posting in ways that you believe to be designed to inflame, we would appreciate it if you would all stick to our Talk Guidelines and report these posters to us, rather than calling them a troll on the boards or personally attacking them.

We do warn/ban posters for making posts we believe to be inflammatory but it is more difficult to follow this through when regular posters are breaking our Guidelines by attacking them in return.

Above all, we'd urge you to remember the age-old adage not to "feed the troll". An audience who won't be played is pretty dull, after all. Wink

If you're suspicions are aroused, then please report it and move on. We promise to look into each and every report.

Many thanks.

@AnyFucker

thanks helen

what are your thoughts on Lemon Puffs, btw ?

I (very respectfully, natch) disagree with their classification as an enjoyable biscuit...

@MitchiestInge

Which is your preferred distraction Helen, hobnob or manky rectal abscess?

Oooh, decisions, decisions, MitchestInge...

HelenMumsnet · 05/09/2011 17:38

@Beachcomber

But see that is another one of their failings. They can't make their minds up. I can't abide a ditherer.

You talkin' about me, Beachcomber? Eh? Eh?

HelenMumsnet · 05/09/2011 20:39

@BecauseImWorthIt

@dittany

I want to know how he's getting away with it.

What is Mumsnet's criteria to identify trolls in the Feminist Section?

Sorry, I'm going to wheel out the West Wing analogy: The Secret Service don't comment on procedure .

Hello. For those who haven't yet seen our earlier post on this thread, it might be worth repeating the last few pars here:
