Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

You don't have to be feminist to post here, but it helps...

I've noticed that whenever a 'non-feminist' view is brought up, there are occasionally some posts along the lines of 'this is a feminist board, why come here if you aren't...', etc.

Genuine question - is this a feminist board, or a board about feminism? Obviously the majority of posters are feminist, but I'm not sure whether that is because feminists (surprise surprise) like discussing feminism, or because it is seen as a feminist 'safe haven'?

kerry - check out the Dr Who thread. Wink

desp - no, sorry, I meant there's a Feminism Chat thread. Not ordinary Chat. That was confusing!

Btw, I am not a big reader of Feminist Theory either, so we stare blankly together if you like? Grin

LRDTheFeministDragon · 29/08/2011 22:06

Oh, piss, you beat me to it UMS.

NotQuiteSoDesperate · 29/08/2011 22:06

UsingMainlySpoons I always considered myself a very strong feminist and then I read threads on here and start questioning myself and feel a bit Blush

NotQuiteSoDesperate · 29/08/2011 22:08

Thanks - didn't realise about the feminist chat thread. Will have a look at that too.

OMG, realising that my MN addiction is going to get worse. My Twitter friends thought I had died because I have not been on there in ages!

It's quite refreshing that it's some other section getting slated today.

NotQuitesoDesperate - i'm not that well read nor a particularly clear thinker but I post anyway as I strongly believe feminism is for everyone, and if people roll their eyes and think How Obvious I don't care. I'm not malicious or on a wind up and that's what annoys people here. So I say get stuck in.

Tyr that's hilarious. I particularly like 'coven of woe'

NotQuiteSoDesperate · 29/08/2011 22:11

UsingMainlySpoons Serious is fine, it's just the infighting and confrontations that make me nervous. Maybe I need a thicker skin :)

LRDTheFeministDragon · 29/08/2011 22:12

Shurrup sal, you're a clear thinker.

NotQuiteSoDesperate · 29/08/2011 22:12

SinicalSal Thanks, I will try to :) It's just the level of debate on here is so high at times that I feel a bit thick! Not that this is a criticism, it's good to have intelligent debate.

desperate - I don't think it's usually as fighty as it has been lately, FWIW. There's someone who's just got banned for pissing around, so some of what looks like confrontation was trollery.

As far as 'infighting' goes ... well, we're all different people with a pretty wide range of views, it's not really 'in' fighting IMO, if that makes sense?

LRDTheFeministDragon · 29/08/2011 22:16

I felt thick on the Dr Who thread. I had no idea DH's anatomy was so vulerable to the ravages of time. Sad

SybilBeddows · 29/08/2011 22:16

Tyr - I love the archaic capital letters in the bit you quoted. Is there a chance he might be an accidental time-traveller from the early 18th century? It would explain his discomfort with modern gender politics.

NotQuiteSoDesperate · 29/08/2011 22:18

If you have all "known" each other for a long time, then what looks like infighting for a lurker isn't really, I suppose. Oh, there must be loads of people like me, reading these threads and wondering, just wondering if they dare post.

If you say 'but women should really be careful what they wear' then yeah - someone will maybe say 'well, really?'
It's a better area than most for challenging rape myths and sexism and so on, but that's probably obvious from the title.

scottishmummy · 29/08/2011 22:19

any time i want told im anti-feminist,
what about da men
derailer
or told not to post on a particular topic
...i just mosey on over to feminist board

i do snigger at the inflated sense of importance that some do genuinely feel they can instruct posters which part of an open discursive forum to post on

and no i dont stop contributing or posting just because someone no likey

SinicalSal · 29/08/2011 22:20

LRD thanks Blush but I do get muddled quite a bit but as desperate says the level of debate is really high - really helps to clarify what it is I think I mean...if you follow me.
there's room for all levels here, as it should be.

SinicalSal · 29/08/2011 22:21

you're most welcome SM

NotQuiteSoDesperate · 29/08/2011 22:22

scottishmummy I'm happy that people here were trying to help me by suggesting sections I would find good to post on.

NotQuiteSoDesperate · 29/08/2011 22:23

scottishmummy Sorry, I think I misread what you were saying - please ignore my last post Blush

Tyr · 29/08/2011 22:29

SinicalSal,

"coven of woe" is a corker and if any of you ever start an all-female heavy metal band, you got yourselves a name.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 29/08/2011 22:46

desperate - FWIW, I haven't 'known' this lot for more than I think 6-8 months. I've not been on MN that long either.

NotQuiteSoDesperate · 29/08/2011 23:03

LRDTheFeministDragon Oh, similar to me then - thought you were a real old hand Wink
