Overly sexual portrayal of women on children's TV

I have just complained to Ofcom about a 'children's' science TV show called 'Brainiac (Science Abuse)' . When I flicked on the TV yesterday at 8:30am, I stumbled upon this show with unbelievably degrading and overly sexual portrayal of women. The women are dressed very sexually and provocatively, there is an incredible amount of sexual innuendo, frankly act in a way that is demeaning to women in my opinion.

If you looks at their website, you can see a couple of examples (see 'Meet the Girls' photos and the videos 'Tickles Body' and 'How hard is your thing?'). I cannot believe that this show has been running for so long as a 'kids show'. I cannot see how the scantily-clad women are appropriate for a children's show.

If you feel like complaining to Ofcom yourself about this program, you fill out a form here. stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/tell-us/specific-programme-epg.

WTF? This is supposed to be a science programme aimed at children? If anything, it's aimed at adolescent boys and frankly men of any age to toss off to. Meet the Braniac Girls

Thanks for the form link. My jaw is on the floor with this one.

This does not excuse the show in the slightest but I'm pretty sure it's not actually a "kids" show, actually aimed at "lads" of the FHM Phwoar look at them baps variety . This does not mean it belongs on TV at 8.30 in the morning. Unfortunately a lot of channels seem to have no idea what's appropriate when, for example Jeremy Kyle at 9.45am, Crime Shows with disturbing content in the early afternoon and so on and so on.

Apart from occasional kids TV channels it's easier to keep the darn thing switched off.

Unless this was on a kids channel in which case I will hurl and then complain.

talitha7 · 14/08/2011 22:46

Well, I posted a complaint to Ofcom today in any case. I also wondered whether it really was meant to be for kids, but looking into it further, it really does appear to be so!!!! Even if they claim they aren't, sexual themes are meant to be reserved during certain hours (I think 8:30pm to 5am) on TV, so that is a large part of my complaint.

I really couldn't understand how they can be so clueless...

Ds loved watching this with dh until I took a closer look and realised just how sexist it was. He was 8 at the time and it really appealed to him. Willcertainly be complaining too.

turquoisetumble · 04/09/2011 23:58

It makes me want to cry. Is this really 2011?

higgle · 17/09/2011 15:51

DH had a look, said definately not aimed at children!

LeBOF · 17/09/2011 15:54

Bloody hell ShockAngry

meditrina · 17/09/2011 16:03

It's not a children's programme, though; it's also not on a children's channel.

That doesn't stop it being objectionable (I think of it as Top Gear does science), but a using children's angle is unlikely to advance any complaint.

LeBOF · 17/09/2011 16:06

Well that's something, I suppose. It's still horrifically sexist.

glub · 30/09/2011 23:36

i thought this was aimed at man-children. not actual children.

Missingfriendsandsad · 30/09/2011 23:52

Well, its just bollocks isn't it - not really the same as 'look strippers can think too' more like 'we have scripted tits girls to say something clever .

Its just shit. Its not that sexyness and kids TV can't go together, my single male friend is very disturbed by LazyTown - a perky short-skirted american 12 year-old looking girl, but lazy town is not crappy carwash BS.. I think there should be men in this too in tight 70s football shorts, cowboy boots and vests bending over cars - then perhaps it would be better.

I do think if they want sex in science, they could put girls in short lab coats and it would be better than the sloppy vest magaluf crap...

A bit sideways here...But Chuggington. Why do the women all have porno bodies and sprayed on clothes, but the blokes look like they haven't passed through puberty?
Confused

The thing is fondle, we're all grown up women here.

We're not really that interested in adolescent self obsessed facebook sites.

But good luck with it, I"m sure your little friends like it. Now run along and play with them, there's a dear, the grown ups are busy talking just now.

Hmm
GloriaSteinem · 22/11/2011 19:20

Hi Fongle, you seem a bit troubled. Do you want to talk about what it is about strong, intelligent women that scares you so much? Hugz
