Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

AIBU to think that if you email a pic of your genitals to a child, then you are indeed a "sick paedo"?

I am shocked that the Times journalist Graham Spiers's posts on Twitter.

Everyone condemns what Craig Thomson has done. But he is no ?sick paedo? and the rest of it. This is what the internet does to kids today.

I feel sorry for Hearts? Craig Thomson, as deplorable as his actions have been. This kid, in the internet age, took a dire wrong turning.

He later said that he is not defending the Hearts player, who has been put on the sex offenders register for emailing young girls story here

From that article it is clear that the footballer was grooming the girls, that he knew for sure how old they were. How can anyone say that he "took a wrong turn".

Mme
I know. The story is shocking. I heard about the fact they weren't sacking him and I just couldn't believe it. What do these guys have to do to actually lose their jobs?

Spiers used to be on tv in Scotland every Sunday for years and, to be fair, he always seemed pretty unpopular with viewers. He's kind of 'gentleman football fan' type. I had to leave the room when he came on.

bibbity
We can set up a helpline for them.

Pagwatch · 28/06/2011 17:55

I don't agree about the sports journo thing.
My fill is a very close friend of a sports editor and he would not tolerate neaderthal attitudes on his team. Met a few and ditto.

I am sure there are some but I don't think it is a type

MmeLindor. · 28/06/2011 17:57

ok, maybe I am being unfair.

I actually know the sports editor of a major Scottish newspaper and he is the lovliest guy.

Sorry, was kneejerk reaction. I had the other guys in my head - what were they called?

If I were the swearing type I'd say fuck off to you for that pat comment floyjoy.

floyjoy · 28/06/2011 18:01

Sense of humour by-pass?

I cannot believe that on a thread about this journo's views, that he made public about a adult who preyed on young teenage girls what I posted offends you! Get some sense of proportion, please.

AnyFucker · 28/06/2011 18:07

I am confused

why are you ladies arguing amongst yourselves ?

Pagwatch · 28/06/2011 18:08

I'm not.

bibbitybobbityhat · 28/06/2011 18:08

Yes, sense of humour utterly bypassed.

Casually stating that everyone in a given profession would not be revolted by what this journalist has said on Twitter, let alone what the perpetrator himself has done, and infact would probably defend them both - sorry but I cannot see the humour in that AT ALL.

Lazy lazy stereotyping. Perhaps you could apologise for it?

floyjoy · 28/06/2011 18:09

She started it, AnyF.

Pagwatch · 28/06/2011 18:11

Grin at AF being thread mum.

AnyFucker · 28/06/2011 18:11

aww stop it

I thought it was only me that got into rucks that have absolutely nothing to do with the subject of such a serious thread

AnyFucker · 28/06/2011 18:12

I am notorious for it

Don't be like me

Do as I say, not as I do

Or no pudding < glares >

bibbitybobbityhat · 28/06/2011 18:14

Carry on - am hiding this.

floyjoy · 28/06/2011 18:15

I am sorry that you are offended by my post (although it didn't actually say what you say that it did).

What do you think about the actual OP?

floyjoy · 28/06/2011 18:16

Wow.

floyjoy · 28/06/2011 18:18

AnyF
But so often you are the voice of reason on a thread. It's impossible not to see your name and think 'Right, what's AnyFucker got to say about this?'

ChristinedePizan · 28/06/2011 18:23

He knew one of the girls for years and the other girl's age was on her profile. There is no excuse and no doubt that he used his position to lure young girls. There was a link on saltire's thread which was interesting/scary - I will go and find it.

AnyFucker · 28/06/2011 18:24

No, floy, you don't want to grow up to be like me, I promise you Grin

it's not big, and it's not clever

SheCutOffTheirTails · 28/06/2011 18:26

I would have thought these kinds of newspapers hated pedophiles more than they love footballers.

Not thrilled to be proved wrong.

ToscanaBambina · 28/06/2011 18:27

I know MN does not have a 'humanist' section, but this really is more about human decency than anything else. An adult man (20 is an adult in any sense of the word) sending pornographic images to a child he knows to be under the age of 16 is wrong. And it is something that person should be disciplined for...and not just through the courts.

I once did some consultancy for a public sector agency. One of my counterparts got caught with child pornography on his home computer. He was sacked. Immediately. Ugh. Horrible, horrible man/

floyjoy · 28/06/2011 18:28

Yes. There's been an attempt to try and pretend it was all kind of unknowing by using the whole texting/internet kind of ease of access and anonymity element that seems to feature in these kind of stories. As if we all think this can be random and accidental becasue it's not face-to-face abuse. I don't understand how anyone can try and excuse this.

floyjoy · 28/06/2011 18:29

AnyF
But it is good.

floyjoy · 28/06/2011 18:31

I also knew someone at work who was found to have downloaded pornographic material onto a work computer and he too was sacked. He'd been doing it for ages. He was really sad when he got sacked, which amazed us.
