New slang words in scrabble

article here

What do people think about the use of the word punanny? It's (to me) a horrid slang word for female genitals, on a par with p*y and c*t. Makes my skin crawl to hear it, now it's allowed in scrabble.

Maybe I'm overreacting?? I don't usually post in this section but after reading this story, felt I should check whether I was being unreasonable and sensitive.

Isn't punanny the standard hindi word for a vagina though, so it's just an appropriation of another language.

I have no idea though, and don't really want to google the word just in case I get something dodgy!

Cunt is a dictionary word, so IMO should be permissible in Scrabble.

Not if you are playing with your DCs perhaps, unless you are really desperate to win.

I've never seen it spelt that way, how odd! But if it is Hindi I guess it can be transliterated all sorts of ways.

I don't see it as being particularly horrible - never heard it used in slang myself, except in the phrase 'Armani punani', which is objectionable, and refers to someone who's had cosmetic surgery on themselves.

In general I tend to think words like cunt and so on are nice words for a part of the body I'm quite fond of, and in Scrabble they're not being used as an insult, so I'm not sure of the problem. Wouldn't use it in front of my family though, I grant. Grin

Grin at using that word in front of family! My ILs love a game of scrabble so I could imagine their faces if I whipped that one out.

I've only heard it used in a west indian setting, in songs which are derogatory etc - I did not know it was a Hindi word. In which case I will reassess my opinion.

Eek! at every one trusting my opinion. I don't actually know, but it is a word I've heard Asian friends use a lot, and from the kind of friends/conversations, I assumed it was either the standard word or pretty average slang like vadge or fanny.

Straight2Extremes · 09/05/2011 09:55

punany isn't really slang it's a direct translation for the word Vagina in hindu

bucaneve · 09/05/2011 09:57

Oh phew I wasn't making it up then :)

IMO context and intent are important. Women are conditioned/encouraged to find 'cunt' offensive but centuries ago it was used as just one of many bawdy terms relating to genitals/sex and would only be 'offensive' in that context. As Tillie Olsen said, 'There are cuss words and there are words that hurt.'

interested in this discussion as dh and me have so many arguments about cunt. i hate it as it's a word for part of my body that is commonly used as an insult and that is why i object.. i also don't use the words 'dickhead' or 'wanker' (or others) either. My dh says its simply anglosaxon and vagina is a word taken from latin that is intended to sanitise what is earthy and raw. but for me it is the insult and force with which it is used that makes it out of bounds for me.
would not use t is scrabble either!
