Is Miranda anti-feminist?

Ihavewelliesbuttheyrenotgreen · 08/05/2011 22:08

The tv show 'Miranda', I know not everyone is a fan but I think that there are a lot of anti-feminist themes, if you look hard enough

Lots of the women are obsessed with Marriage esp Miranda's DM
Gary works as a chef (male-dominated job)
Stevie and Miranda work in a shop (female-dominated job)
The only successful women are mocked (esp Tilly)
Miranda refers to successful women as 'career bitches'
Clive is a waiter but is gay (I think)
Miranda has issues with her weight and is mocked for this
Miranda tries to look more femine
Stevie has a relationship with an older man and this is accepted

Grin lets start a thread for every tv programme that ever was

MollieO · 08/05/2011 22:12

Last time I checked Miranda was a comedy show. Some comedy shows get laughs from conforming to stereotypes. Miranda is one of these shows. It is not a requirement of all tv shows to be pro 'feminist' Hmm

BitOfFun · 08/05/2011 22:15

You are taking the piss now.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 08/05/2011 22:16

I think she was taking the piss a while ago.

MollieO, how come no-one said this about the Friends thread?

I do wonder if you are able to enjoy any form of entertainment rather than analysing every details to decide whether it conforms to gender stereotype or not.

if you decide that is failing in its pro feminism, does it make it less worthy of being aired?

She owns the shop but Stevie doesn't. Don't even get me started on the fact that Stevie has a masculine name.
Miranda doesn't buy into the marriage thing but other women do Tilly, Stevie (to an extent) and Penny of course. There is quite a big focus on men by all the women on the show.

Sorry didn't see the Friends thread so can't comment Smile.

Mamazon exactly, why did no-one say this on the friends thread?

I think that posters are perfectly entitled to apply a feminist analysis to whatever the fuck they like in the Feminism section, without people rocking up just to deride and mock them. You don't show up in Chicken-Keepers to be deliberately rude and dismissive, yet somehow it seems completely acceptable for people to do just that over here.

SuchProspects · 08/05/2011 22:29

One of the things I like about Miranda is it has a woman who does not fit the usual TV looks criteria with a guy who is good looking and don't comment on it and I can't think of any other TV show where this is the case. But it is the norm with male lead programs (average looking guy - model standard woman, not comment made). There are several other good points about the show. I think she does play for laughs at the expense of women sometimes though.

Mamaz0n · 08/05/2011 22:35

oh i see, this was a deliberate mock thread/ sorry i hadn't realised.
I saw a few is this or that show pro or anti feminist.

But my opinion stands. I think it is wise to analys tv in general, particularly the shows that are aimed at women in general. But even if it is decided that they are npt particularly pro feminist that doesn't mean the show is any less entertaining.
you just watch with knowledge once you are fully informed of the underlying issues

Ihavewelliesbuttheyrenotgreen · 08/05/2011 22:58

Basically I have encountered two threads in the feminist section and was a little bit confused and curious. Firstly I went on to the 'Friends' threads and was informed by Darlene that I wasn't allowed to have an opinion that was different to hers (I did actually agree with some of her points). So I thought that this was a bit rude but I perservered and came across a thread about anti-feminism in childrens TV shows. One of the points that the OP made in this thread was that Peppa Pig was very pink, they are pigs Hmm. This left me wondering if it was possibe to find anti-feminism anywhere if you looked hard enough. So I did a little social experiment.

I may check out the chicken section Wink

Hardly surprising to find anti-feminism everywhere in a misogynistic world though is it?

well.... not content with succesful derailment of the Friends thread, through sheer obtuseness, OP is now actively messing up the whole feminism forum by taking the piss - I think it's rude, annoying, and actually thick.

SybilBeddows · 08/05/2011 23:06

oh dear Ihavewellies, I think you misunderstood re the Peppa Pig pink thing. Feminists often use 'pink' as a shorthand for stereotypical girliness, cf the campaign PinkStinks. They will not have been referring to the pig family's actual colour. Smile

Ihavewelliesbuttheyrenotgreen · 08/05/2011 23:08

Good point Suchprospects, does this mean we should boycott many of these TV shows/fims etc? Or should we accept that it is entertainment and that there may be some feminist points in there too? How much antifeminism is too much?

Beertricks- i like to call it a social experiment

Joan I'm not sure what you mean, would you elaborate?

OP posts:
JoanofArgos · 08/05/2011 23:09

You're anti-feminist, and you're taking the piss.
At least do it in chat.

And btw, yes, Miranda Hart is anti-feminist. Ha ha, look at me - the joke is...... I'M NOT VERY PRETTY!
