I'm still undecided which way to vote. I can't see AV making a differnce to women but I'm probably missing something.

I voted YES.

I think it's slightly fairer the first-past-the-post, so that's good enough for me at the moment.

Coffeeisking · 05/05/2011 11:25

I voted yes,

It makes more sense to me as i like 2 main parties and it would make more peoples preferences count in elections.

My other half is a labour supporter but in my town they have no chance of getting anywhere so he doesnt bother voting but uner the new system his vote may count much more than it does now.

David Cameron is worried as under the new system he could loss a fair few MP's!

SybilBeddows · 05/05/2011 11:31

I will be, but I haven't worked out what the consequences will be for women!

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 05/05/2011 11:34

I will be voting Yes because it will piss the Tories off, what IC said and the fact that the current voting system doesn't seem to be increasing women's representation in Parliament. I think that there is a chance with the new system that might change (although AV obviously doesn't change the gender of the candidates put forward by each party).

Its a possibility prince

HumanBehaviour · 05/05/2011 11:42

I would have voted yes, but I can't vote.

melpomene · 05/05/2011 11:43

Article here concludes that it wouldn't necdessarily make any difference to women's representation. I agree.

I voted no because I think that it is far inferior to proper PR and a lot of the claims made for it don't hold up. Eg there will still be wasted votes, there will still be tactical voting in many circumstance (it would just become more complicated to vote tactically). It also seems inconsistent that you can end up counting the second preferences of people who vote for a party that comes 5th/last, while ignoring the second preferences of those who vote for the party that comes 4th.

Plus I now detest Nick Clegg and the libs and don't want to do anything that would benefit them.

Ragwort · 05/05/2011 11:44

Yes.

I was slightly put out when I went to vote this morning as I was asked if I wanted to vote for all three elections (ie: AV/town council and county council) - why is the Polling Clerk asking, surely the voter should just be given the three forms - its almost implying that it's not important to vote for all three sections Confused.

SardineQueen · 05/05/2011 12:20

Yes I've voted

Voted yes

Don't think it will do much for women though

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 05/05/2011 14:17

I've voted for it. Mainly because there are certain parties that I want to keep out out out (largely because their members have terrible attitudes to women) and I would rather have several of the other parties than them. Also because it will allow me to express my preference for parties that field female candidates (an idea from another thread).

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 05/05/2011 14:17

Also I can't miss an oppotunity to post this:

nickelbabe · 05/05/2011 14:18

I'm voting Yes.

It's not because I want AV, it's because I want the twats in charge to know that FPTP is not good enough a system

Voted yes but most of mu colleagues (if they vote) are going to vote no because the Sun says so

sharbie · 05/05/2011 17:44

done and yes

colditz · 05/05/2011 17:44

I voted no, because I didn't really understand it, I forgot it was voting day, and I was in a hurry.

I think really the only point of me voting was to show my female face. We are in the safest tory seat in the country.

Can't remember who said it, but everytime I go to vote on pretty much anything I remember that saying:
"If voting changed anything they'd ban it."

Nevertheless, I voted 'YES', not so much to AV (although I do have a faint hope that, like Dittany says, my vote might be more effective) as against the status quo. Think I am on the losing side though. Sight of Daily Mail's front page in the shop this morning really made my heart sink.

AliceWorld · 05/05/2011 20:01

I voted yes. Would prefer PR but that isn't on the agenda so at last it's a step in the right direction. No would take PR off the agenda. And of course Peter Stringfellow supports the no campaign, so that's a good enough recommendation for me Grin

YourCallIsImportant · 05/05/2011 20:03

Yes here too.

RamblingRosa · 05/05/2011 20:27

I voted Yes but not for very coherent reasons.
Main reasons:
No campaign almost entirely Tory funded.
As Alice says, a win for the No campaign takes PR off the agenda.
From what I can understand, AV is marginally fairer than FPTP.

I've been wavering all week especially after reading the threads on here. I voted 'yes' in the end because I think, as others do, that a 'no' landslide or a large proportion of non-voters will enshrine FPTP forever.

Incidentally in a referendum is the winner a majority of the votes cast or a majority of the number of people eligible to vote?

MotherSnacker · 05/05/2011 20:41

Voted yes
