I grew up with eminem so have a few cd's lying around my sis has aquired a few and had one on,and no joke one of the songs includes the chorus, 'its time for you to rape me again' Shock

I had to clarify with my sis , I never noticed that the first time round was pretty shocked it had gone under my radar.

any of you had this 'god I didnt notice that the first time ' wuth songs/ maybe even tv etc.

ignore other offending artists in the rap field that are even worse fly under the radar thats my point.
But that's a point you haven't mentioned until now - and it is a good point that I definitely agree with you on. In fact it isn't just the rap field where it is a problem.

Sorry - I thought 50 cent was an album by Eminem Blush - definitely not up on my rap!!

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 01/05/2011 12:21

However, if the lyrics are worse on other rap records why on earth do you listen to them? Genuine question btw. I can't imagine listening to and enjoying music that contains so much hatred. I also can't imagine lyrics much worse than the Eminem song msrisotto quoted so I dread to think what other rappers are saying.

I was a much younger teen on purchase pretty desensitised by them,

I got my sister to buy the Marshall Mathers LP (one of his albums for those who thought 50 cent was also one Wink)for me when I was 14 or 15 as my mum wouldn't have let me with the explicit content sticker on the front. I have many of his albums. The lyrics kind of washed over me at the time which is SO fucking disturbing I can't quite believe it. The thing is, the tunes are catchy and somehow acceptable to be played on the radio and I guess this is a paternalistic culture so i'm not surprised he is popular the way he is/was.

You did mention that other 'artists' are just as bad if not worse which is true, but this is a thread about Eminem so I talked about him, also was surprised at your tongue in cheek comment and other defending stuff you said.

This is was actually about what things have you noticed later on that shocked you in songs I just used him as an example,

MsRisotto Btw, at the end of that song he says "I'm only playing ladies, you know i love ya."

Also that song was off the Marshall Mathers LP, which was his second album and it was released more than 10 years ago. It was very dark.

Another song off that album is "Criminal" in which the first lyrics are this:

A lot of people ask me.. stupid fucking questions
A lot of people think that.. what I say on records
or what I talk about on a record, that I actually do in real life
or that I believe in it
Or if I say that, I wanna kill somebody, that..
I'm actually gonna do it
or that I believe in it
Well, shit.. if you believe that
then I'll kill you
You know why?
Cause I'm a....

Since that album Eminem has become much more mainstream and as has already been said, tongue in cheek.

I can't understand why people go so crazy over music because singers or rap artists are talking about murder in their songs when very graphic trailers for movies are on tv.

msrisotto · 01/05/2011 13:53

MsRisotto Btw, at the end of that song he says "I'm only playing ladies, you know i love ya."

Well that makes it all ok then!

You know that abusive men often say the same thing after beating seven shades of shit out of their wives or girlfriends? Doesn't take it away though.

And did you read the article linked above? his more recent work doesn't sound much lighter:

Fe Fi Fo Fum
I think I smell the scent of a placenta
I enter central park, it's dark, it's winter in December
I see my target with my car, and park and approach her tender
Young girl by the name of Brenda and I pretend to befriend her
Sit down beside her like a spider, hi there girl you mighta
Heard of me before, see whore you're the kinda girl that I'da
Assault and rape and figure why not try to make your pussy wider
Fuck you with an umbrella then open it up while that shits inside ya

And don't tell us we shouldn't be getting upset by this when violent stuff is on TV. It's like saying that this isn't bad enough for us to discuss which is a weird thing to say.

strawberrymewmew · 01/05/2011 13:58

I didn't say it made it okay, I just found it funny how you posted his whole song including sound effects but decided to miss the last line out.

And I was in an abusive relationship with someone who had beaten 7 shades of shit out of me on a few occasions, it's not as if I just don't understand or care what alot of these lyrics are pointed towards.

And thank you for twisting my words
"And don't tell us we shouldn't be getting upset by this when violent stuff is on TV. It's like saying that this isn't bad enough for us to discuss which is a weird thing to say."

I never even implied I didn't think it was bad enough to discuss! I just meant that you always see people complaining about singers and rappers but very rarely about movies or trailers for movies. People just want someone to blame.

msrisotto · 01/05/2011 14:03

I copy and pasted it from a website. I don't think leaving that bit out (and some other stuff too i think) is important, it's not as if he goes on to plug a women's refuge charity! It's more of the same and the part I quoted illustrated it fine. Why are you trying to pick holes in my argument or change the subject though?

If you'd like to discuss films and trailers than I'd be happy to rant discuss that too, on a different thread so it wouldn't be off topic.

strawberrymewmew · 01/05/2011 14:06

How am I trying to change the subject?
I simply gave my opinion just as you did.

msrisotto · 01/05/2011 14:16

Sigh, I don't really want to talk about you strawberry, I was talking about rap music etc but if you insist, I said you were trying to change the subject because you basically criticised me for 'going crazy' over lyrics in songs.

"I can't understand why people go so crazy over music because singers or rap artists are talking about murder in their songs when very graphic trailers for movies are on tv."

Can we get back to the subject now?

SueSylvesterforPM · 01/05/2011 14:19

seems like this thread has derailed slightly

For anyone who hasn't seen this film, it is really good. The beginning is a bit cheesy but the documentary starts at about 1 minute 30seconds

Beyond Beats & Rhymes

jenny60 · 01/05/2011 14:30

I never did understand the argument that because something else is equally bad or even worse, the subject in question is somehow immune from criticism Confused

albania · 01/05/2011 14:36

The lady marmalade song
Blush
never once understood that it was all sexual, but I never listened to it properly either - just enough to sing the chorus. I suddenly 'got' it when DD2 (13) started singing it in the car with her headphones on and I couldn't hear the music, had to listen to the words. Was a bit Blush
The only eminem songs I have on my ipod are 'beautiful' and 'mockingbird', both of which I think are lovely

noodle69 · 02/05/2011 10:40

I listen to a lot of eminem, tupac and other rap/hip hop artists. I dont think its a big deal tbh and just see it as music. Then again I dont think playing things like COD makes people more violent either. I wouldnt let my daughter listen to the very explicit versions if I could help it though. I agree with earlier posters about tunes like criminal and stan are him saying none of this is real.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 02/05/2011 11:45

Why is undisguised sexism and misogyny in song lyrics more acceptable than "bad" language?

So it's okay for impressionable young children to hear hate-filled scenarios about women, but not okay for them to hear the word "fuck"....? Confused

msrisotto · 02/05/2011 12:51

COD?

SueSylvesterforPM · 02/05/2011 12:52

I was half listening to the radio the other day and the song "Grenade" came on. Hadn't really listened to it before but suddenly I noticed the lyrics and was Shock - okay it's no worse than a lot of other low-level pervasive song lyrics but I was still a bit Hmm about it.

The lyrics:

To give me all your love is all I ever ask
'cause what you don't understand is
I'd catch a grenade for ya
Throw my hand on a blade for ya
I'd jump in front of a train for ya
You know I'd do anything for ya
Oh, I would go through all this pain
Take a bullet straight through my brain
Yes, I would die for you baby
But you won't do the same

So it's normal to demand "all your love" from a partner and be upset if they are less than willing to die for you? Confused
