Daily Mail patronising "WPCs"'

I saw this article earlier today, and yes it is on the Mail website, I know it's wrong, but I seem to somehow enjoy reading the trash and having a bit of a rant about it to friends at work.

The headline is: "Brummie's Angels" Three hero WPCs who brushed aside sawn-off shotgun to corner fleeing armed robbers.

If it was the officers' own idea to pose in a Charlie's Angels fashion then fair enough, but otherwise dear lord could the photographer/editor be more patronising? Would they have got three male officers or a mixed group to pose like that? And dear Daily Fail editor - WPC is an obsolete term and has been for over a decade; I think you'll find that they are just police constables as you refer to them later in the article, so why use the outdated term in the headline?

Hmm

Doubt they'd make such a fuss if three male policemen ran after armed robbers because you know, they're doing their job.

Where's the rolling eye emoticon when you need it?

The article said that their awards were given by the "West Midlands Association for Women in Policing", and that they will also be getting a medal from the "International Association of Women in Policing". Fair play to them it sounds like a scary situation and I doubt I could have done it, but like you say it is actually their job. I doubt there is an "International Association of Men in Policing" that would give blokes a medal for doing it!

Absolutely. I hope I didn't belittle tehir achievement in any way as it's a very brave thing for anyone to do.

It's a dilemma though. Do you treat genders exactly the same or do you promote females over males as they are discriminated against?
