Discuss;

women and men have obvious bilogical differences, but these and the hormones that facilitate these differences dont mean that women and men think differently and react to situations differently, apart from the fact men have penises and women dont and that women can bf and ive birth the differences between the sexes are minimal.

stereo types such as women being able to multitask, more suited to carin professions or childcare etc are fallacies.

Thouhts propogated by womens magazines such as women are more mental in their sexual desires and stimulation, whereas men are more visual are untrue.

There is no such thin as pms/pmt, the hormonal differences between men ans women dont affect behaviour. men are just as likely to be havin a bad day and grumpy as women.

have i understood the femenist perspective?

im tryin to understand, from what ive seen here i get the impression equal cannot mean different.

those femenists that believe men and woman are different, what differences do they believe we have? differences that dont impact on our abilities to perform certain tasks etc?

well, i haven't had children yet and i persue a traditionally masculine job and traditionally masculine passtimes so i believe that the subset of human beings that i am similar too is not the same as the subset of human beings that is the same sex as me.

that's a personal perspective not a 'feminist perspective'. but i am a feminist.

I think the jury's out about differences in the brain between sexes. Basically brains are minutely different but this could be down to plasticity brought about by conditioning.

Simon baron Cohen's theory is that sex differences in the brain do exist. He is studying newborns yo try to ascertain if there is a difference before conditioning can take effect. His work has been critiqued by Cordelia Fine who sets out yo dhow there are no sex differences.

Personally, I dunno.

There is also alot of criticism of biological determinism and evolutionary theory ie: me Tarzan, you Jane crap about females keeping the cave clean while the men go out hunting and that we are all genetically predisposed towards certain roles in order to continue reproducing.

NormanTebbit · 15/04/2011 20:13

And I think Simon baron Cohen would agree with you there SGM. Valid, empirical research into brain differences can be used to prop up all sorts of gender myths like Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.
