It has to be interesting and engagingly-written (interesting content but dry style is a no-go).

Wholeheartedly recommend 'The Map That Changed the World' by Simon Winchester.

Geology, geography, dollop of class battle and the good guy wins (eventually) - really interesting, and written in such a way that it's not too dry or dull.
