I am extremely pissed off by the attitudes on this thread;

Here

Some women need a good clout around the head.

Saltatrix - in fact I do have a stepson and I do warn him and care about his wellbeing just as much.

Also, it is possible that you are right, of course, and I do not know the stats to back up what my gut feeling is. I wonder if someone has and whether muggings, sexual assaults, rapes etc by strangers on the streets (not at parties, etc) involve disproportionately more women (or elderly or disabled for that matter) or not.

"involve disproportionately more women (or elderly or disabled for that matter) victims or not."

Good for you Sardine, I do not think anybody will disagree with you and being looked up is shit Grin. I do not sit at home either. And I do travel around with my disabled dh to different places all around the world. I just do read the warnings and I do plan if I can (not always).

SardineQueen · 13/04/2011 16:58

Of reported events men are at highest risk.

However they are on the streets much more at higher risk times than others - women, the elderly and children.

Sexual assaults often go unreported so it is hard to get a handle on how many there are - obviously vast majority of victims would be women and children.

My bottom line is that if a woman decides not to toe the line when it comes to the restrictions that others decide to put on her freedom, then that is up to her, and that it is a real shame that so many do restrict their movements. Especially when there is no evidence (that I know of) that these restrictions actually stop bad stuff from happening.

There is an argument that if there were more people out and about then it would be safer for all of us.

SardineQueen · 13/04/2011 17:01

xposts yes. Use some common sense, and if some bastard does anything then don't blame yourself , it's bad luck, no more, no less.

charitygirl, I'm boring myself with repeating this now. I admitted all along that there is every possibility that it was a sexist remark.

To say absolutely that it is sexist with no room for questions. To say it would NEVER be said to a man is what I took issue with all along. No more. No less. It might be any number of things.

And I also said several times that on a different day, on a different thread I'd be debating alongside those that are talking about misogyny, in the police and otherwise.

What I challenged was the seizing of the event and the use of it as 'proof'.

I'm NOT saying it again. I'm fed up with myself. I'm dull.
