Just so you all know, your message is getting across!

Please bear with me as posting from my phone.

This is, a fairly heated part of MN, but I understand that this is generally linked to how important feminisim is to members here. So I thought I'd post to let you know that yyour message is getting across, even to people like me who were previously feminist averse :)

I was doing to 30 day song challenge, and was going to post a link to my all time favourite song. however knowing the artist (I wont say who, you will all combust with rage) I decided to screen the lyrics first as diddnt know it word for word. There are phrases in there that previously i'd have written off as 'part of the song', but actually are not nice at all.. However from lurking here I HAVE started to think about the bigger picture of my actions, and thought it wrong to either promote the song to children and younger women and men who i am friends with. i dont want my name associated with those words being 'ok'.

I dont know if that will hearten any of you or not, but if feminisim feels an uphil strugge for some I just wanted to show it is not all in vain!

No, not patronising at all :) Before, it wouldn't have entered my haed to think 'could this song have a negative effect on the way women are viewed and treated'. Not in a million years, however, now i do ask myself questions like that, and it is a direct result of my lurkage time here.

That's great toddlerwrangler, thanks for posting :) Sometimes I think feminism is all about seeing the links between 'light' shitty stuff and the really terrible stuff. Patterns start to form, IYKWIM.

That post came across as a little 'yay me', and wasn't meant to .

What I wanted to say is that, as a direct result of this group I have changed the way I both think, and act. I don't think I will ever dissect lyrics to the degree that some members do, but the line 'you are now aloud to officially slap bitches' actually makes me angry, rather then indifferent (like it used to).

It's okay, TW, you didn't come across as "yay me", but as someone who had had an epiphany.

Oh no flouncing here! I say it as it is so if I flounced after every barney there wouldn't be a corner of the internet left for me to use I do lurk and intend to continue to do so but as I noticed it kicking off a bit on another thread I thought you may like to know you arn't all banging your heads against a brick wall, and people ARE stopping to think about feminism :)

Good for you, ousel. The casual misogyny relating to rape (instantly blaming the victim, etc.) should definitely be challenged whenever it's encountered IMO. Those kinds of attitudes are largely responsible for juries' reluctance to convict "decent-looking" rapists when they plead not guilty. Let's hope you did indeed make him think about it more deeply...

This is showing my age but one of my all-time favourite songs is 'Keep on runnin' by the Spencer Davis Group.

However thanks to my raised feminist consciousness I now realise that the song is essentially a celebration of stalking and sexual harrassment
