Boots Ad

Has anyone seen that new Boots advert where a frigid woman reading a book wearing glasses starts to turn down her partner's sexual advances (implication that she has a headache) but he waves a box of painkillers in her face? As my DP commented "who is that supposed to appeal to?".

Men who have to pressurise their partners into sex OR women who are in relationships with men who pester them for sex.

it's weird, right?

I thought that when I saw it. She's like rolling her eyes because 'my excuse has gone and now I'll have to give in and fuck him'. Did I miss it being 1952 night or something?

AIBU eh?...

fallingandlaughing · 17/03/2011 18:26

Yeah I posted here because I remember how the pepsi one went down on aibu.

I knew this one had to be bad because of DP's comment, usually he thinks I am too sensitive about advertising. Have just been helping him realise that he is a feminist at heart Wink before our baby arrives so we can be on the same page on these issues.

I think my relationship with Boots is over.

I agree!

I actually love Boots products and value etc, but their adverts make my heart sink every time I see them.

Trying to appeal to the Stepford Wife mentality, perhaps? Either way, they are wide off the mark for most women.

hester · 17/03/2011 21:45

The ad is ghastly. I can't believe they thought it was a good idea.

ComeAlongPond · 17/03/2011 21:52

Absolutely horrendous.

Mymblesson · 18/03/2011 12:12

Having worked for Boots.com based at their Head Office a few years ago and been involved with the Marketing Department, the sad fact is that this ad will probably have been conceived and approved by a mainly female team.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 18/03/2011 12:18

I haven't seen this ad yet but if I do I will write to them and explain why I will be ending my relationship with them Smile

TryLikingClarity · 18/03/2011 12:43

Mymblesson - your point reminded me of something...

Does anyone recall the most recent series of The Apprentice? One of the episodes they were tasked with making an ad for a fictional home cleaning product.

One of the ads was heavily laden with sexiest and old-fashioned ideas about women. The sad thing was that strong, powerful business women were part of this creative process and took part in the sexism.

Mymblesson · 18/03/2011 12:50

I remember that one TLC.

I also hate the Boots ad for the fact that it crudely sterotypes men as being slaves to their cocks, which would then drive them to coerce their obviously unwilling partner into sex.

Boots are also major tax dodgers:

If you're coming on the London demo on Saturday there is an action against Boots you can take part in:
