If you knoew someone whose idea of prostitution was based on Belle de Jour what film what you recommend them to watch?

I can think of the following:

Mona Lisa

London to Brighton

In the famous British crime film Get Carter the protagonist discovers that his niece(?) is being exploited by pornographers

There used to be a TV series called Band of Gold but I dont remember much about it or how realistic it was

There is a Ukranain (I think) film called Lilya 4 Ever, very sad, about sex-trafficking.

there was a very good series on BBC just recently , BBC3 I think. It was called Five Daughters and was about the girls who were murdered in Ipswich a couple of years back by a misogynistic butcher , Steve Wright I think was his name. It was very bleak but realsitic - all that belle du jour crap makes me puke. The reality for street girls is crack dependency and habitual rape.

BTW there was a very good article about prostitutes and murder in the Guardian magazine last saturday. Very sobering.

Maria Full Of Grace is an amazing (horrific) Brazilian movie about drugs and prostitution.

bibbitybobbityhat · 10/03/2011 12:52

Isn't there one called Working Girl, from the 80s? I think that's what it was called. Very realistic and gritty, lots of images from that film have stayed with me from only one viewing.

ScarlettWalking · 10/03/2011 12:55

Lilya for ever

A truly heartbreaking account of a trafficked teenage girl. Very real and extremely traumatic and disturbing to watch. I think every young girl should see it to view the reality of this life as opposed to all this call girl shite.

Can't link on phone but it's by lukas moodysson

donnie · 10/03/2011 12:58

I think you are confusing your films dittany - it's the crying game ( I could be wrong) where the transsexual reveals himself to the stephen frears character.

Mona Lisa is quite good. It was filmed around my old manor (st pancras, kings x the cally road etc) where I grew up so I have a special affection for it.

5 daughters was excellent as an above comment so sad

An amazing two part film called Sex Traffic, it was broadcast on C4 a few years ago.

Absolutely horrifying and brilliantly acted.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 11/03/2011 15:50

There is a Brazilian film called Pixote - now about 30 years old I think about street children, prostitution, rent boys, crime. Harrowing viewing and lead actor was killed by police later IRL. Sad

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 11/03/2011 15:54

Grin at Pretty Woman.

I remember reading that when Hollywood was making gritty 30s crime / film noirs and the leading lady was a prostitute because of the censorship of the time they always put a sewing machine in her apartment - that way they could tell the censors she was a seamstress.

sakura · 13/03/2011 05:52

Sex Traffic was bloody amazing.
The only problem I had with it was the journalist being represented as a hero for rescuing her and then he ended up having sex with her bruised and battered body. He should have realised she was too vulnerable at that point in time. Apart from that, I thought it was amazing.

sakura · 13/03/2011 05:57

lol OMG at the sewing machine. How bizzare

sakura · 13/03/2011 05:59

here's a link to the film if you want to watch it online Sex traffic

LadyOfTheManor · 20/03/2011 18:08

Sakura I watched that ON tv a while back (few years). It was incredible.

BelfastBloke · 20/03/2011 19:58

donnie and dittany, in the crying game, the transexual revealed himself to the stephen rea character, not the director stephen frears.

I heard ken russell's 'whore' was realistic, but haven't seen it, and not sure what to think of ken russell's oevre.

There was an old BBC thing...from the 80s r early 9s called "Safe" which tackled prostitution among London's young homeless.

It's stayed with me all these years as the young actors in the lead roles were very good.

here it is
