Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

A blog idea

I have been inspired by all the posts on threads where people say 'but women are better at...and men are better at...', and by a van in front of me in traffic this afternoon advertising property management help called 'Bigjobslittlejobs' or something like that. The Logo had a man with a saw at the 'big jobs' end and a woman with a hoover at the 'little jobs' end. Hmm

Knowing, as I now do from here and reading Delusions of Gender, that we are actually socialised to be 'like a woman' or 'like a man', it occurred to me that it might be interesting to start a blog where people could post (or send me to post) photos or stories to show how insidious gender stereotyping is. I know that people don't like to think that they're being socialised to behave a certain way, but I wonder if a massive collection of examples might just be an interesting resource.

I thought a section of photos and stories that challenge gender stereotypes would also be good...and possibly show how outnumbered they are.

Is there anything like this already out there, or do you think it is something it would be worth me doing?

I like it, there can be really ridiculous gender stereotyping and it sounds like your blog would ridicule it which is probably the most effective tool there is to discredit something. Good idea :}

love the idea....

And asking for contributions is a good idea too...i'm ready to whip my phone out to take a pic at a moments notice - (for Faces in Places or whatever) and would certainly be there for something like this...

(i am sick of being asked how my "little" job is going by men and women of my age and older - i earn as much as dh Confused)

tee hee.
great idea!

FlamingoBingo · 10/03/2011 08:13

Ok, will do it (don't need much persuasion, do I? A grand total of three responses Grin)

So, I need a name for the blog? Anyone got any good ideas?

I think it would be good. It sounds a bit like Sociological Images, but still different enough.

Go for it!

Have you seen this article in today's DM (sorry...)?

I'm trying to sort out my thoughts about it, apart from the irritation of the Mail subheading of The Netherlands as "The Land Feminism Forgot" Hmm

RustyRainbow · 10/03/2011 13:24

Yes because all Dutch women have that lifestyle and not just a few media hungry types that she was given to interview Hmm

InmaculadaConcepcion · 10/03/2011 16:59

Quite, RustyRainbow.

The one Dutch woman I know doesn't conform to that description at all, either in attitude or in terms of the work she does (a full-time obstetrician).

FlamingoBingo · 10/03/2011 19:56

Pants! Thought all those extra posts were ideas for names for the blog! Grin

I haven't read the article - off to do so now!

Sorry, FB Grin

"Gender Bending"?

"Genned-up"?

"StereoUntypical"?

"Perceptions And Misconceptions"?

OK - there's a few off the top of me head...

FlamingoBingo · 13/03/2011 12:50

Gah! Only just saw this post, IC! Sorry for nit replying sooner. I love gender stereonontypical. Going to keep thinking about the name and the while format of the blog.

What a great ides.

My friend is an Occupational Therapist and when she and her husband to be (who was a student at the time) were asked what they did by the minister before the wedding, he took very seriously DHto be's job-to-be and dismissed firend's job as 'basket weaving' Shock
