Reg Bailey, Chief Executive of the Mothers? Union, is carrying out an independent (non-religiously aligned) review into the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood.

The online consultation of the public has opened and is availalbe here

Good idea for as many people as possible to respond? It does seem to ask the right range of questions, and regardless of (or perhaps because of) its being hosted by a religious organisation, it would be brilliant if all MN's feminists filled it in.

I'm always a bit suspicious of a Women's organisation that sees the need to have a man as the cheif executive. Unless Reg is short for Regina?

No, is a man. Mothers' Union doesn't seems a great host for the consultation, but the online questionnaire does seem good and I like Buy Bye Childhood's emphasis on the corrosive effect of consumerism.

Deadline for online responses is 18 March

I had an argument with them about it slug Blush They came on here to justify a man being at the head but their argument didn't make sense. Turns out they're a Christian-slanted organization which concentrate on the "family" not mothers. As we know, (and as I told them) the interests of fathers and mothers often don't coincide.

Having said that it's good that they're appropriating taking this issue on board. Although I do worry that the original ethos of the Let Girls be GIrls campaign (which was to stop girls from being objectified in a sexual way) will be lost here, because a Christian organization will take a puritanical line and it will be all about "morality" and "purity" and what have you
