If you were raped would you report it?

A topical question.

I didn't in the past because I was in denial.

For the sake of my privacy I still wouldn't now. It'd make me feel so guilty leaving someone to go free and maybe do it again but psychologically I coudln't cope with a court case and all that goes with it.
Sad Sad Sad

OMFG!! Words fail me. Am reporting your post.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/10/2011 12:48

Have regained the power of words now.

You stupid, stupid person. The reason for the questions and examination are to obtain the evidence that will be used in any subsequent court case.

Have you read the accounts on this thread - do these women sound like liars? I personally think attitudes like yours are what have put genuine rape victims off reporting their rapes.

How would you feel if your wife/mother/sister/daughter was raped and didn't want to report it because the thought of the examination and questioning was too traumatic on top of the rape? Would you still think it was a good thing then, because they might be lying?

Vile beyond belief.

theothersparticus · 26/10/2011 12:55

'mrgreatness', your very name gives away what you are. Do you truely belive women just get bored and decide to report someone for rape? Do you even think before act?

Do you really belive that your post is appropriate? I would like to suggest you buy one of those vile 'rape joke' t shirts so decent people can spot and beat avoid you.

bemybebe · 26/10/2011 13:00

What a creepy place this thread turned to be. Crawling with slimy characters.

Goodness, I am lucky I don't know anyone like that in RL.

ShroudOfHamsters · 26/10/2011 13:01

'as usual there are accusations of trolling. You need to realise that because someone has a different POV they are not by default a troll'

-yes, in the context of this thread, it is equally possible that they are, instead, a slime-sucking humanity-hating shitbag of a rape apologist.

It's important to recognise that, as you say, carpetmistress

I wouldnt bother engaging with these fuckwits at all. You only have to look at the stuff they're posting on a thread in which women talk about having been raped to see them for what they are.

Ignore them. They lack the ability to fully understand how stupid and dull they are.

NoWayNoHow · 26/10/2011 13:49

Wow, this thread has made me go cold all over. There are some freakin' HORRIBLE people on here.

It's so very sad that most people said no, although I'm no different I'm afraid. When I was raped by an ex-work colleague after a boozy night out in the local pub, I didn't report him. I didn't even report after bumping into him at the same pub a few months later when very veiled threats were made.

I genuinely thought for years that, because I was drunk and because I'd taken him up on his offer of the sofa bed downstairs from him, that I must have been at fault when he came down in the middle of the night.

It took me AGES to recognise him for the coward he is, and now it's too late.

In hindsight though, based on what I've read on here, and based on the horrifying statistics, I still don't think I would've reported him had I been more certain of my own innocence in the matter.

I had no idea where the 41% thing was from, Helvetica - thankyou for posting that. It certainly demonstrates what a nonsense that figure is. Even leaving out the stuff about the threatened/mandatory use of the polygraph, 109 cases is such a small statistical sample that any conclusions based on this cannot be seen as scientifically valuable.

To be honest, I don't trust shampoo adverts when I see that the customer satisfaction rating (or whatever) is based on a statistical sample that small - never mind anything more serious!

MonstrouslyNarkyPuffin · 26/10/2011 14:17

So for the investigation to stop the women had to say they weren't raped? And the investigations were carried out by a police force who forced women to take polygraph tests? I wonder why they said they weren't raped Hmm

And 9 years, only 109 reported rapes???? I can't imagine why.

KRITIQ · 26/10/2011 15:24

Wow, thanks for finding that Helvetica. I might try and look further into it if I have time. As I understand it, evidence from lie detectors isn't admissible in UK courts and not in some parts of the US either because it can be unreliable. It seems very dodgy if complainants were pushed into taking a lie detector test. Did they, for example, believe this was something done only for rape complainants perhaps because the police didn't believe them, and therefore made women feel intimidated and more likely to withdraw complaints?

In any case, we know that it is not uncommon for women to withdraw complaints of rape, sexual assault or domestic abuse where they fear repercussions from the perpetrator, have been threatened with violence if they don't drop charges, etc. Withdrawal of a complaint doesn't mean the assault didn't actually take place.

theothersparticus · 26/10/2011 16:18

"normal" Hmm

well since the 'man hating feminists' are actually quoting facts and you're just quoting MRA, I know who I'm listening to.

richdude · 26/10/2011 16:29

mra's don't say that

PamBeesly · 26/10/2011 16:30

I don't hate men richdude I love many of them and have respect for those who I encounter who have respect for me. You come across as if you have a certain experience or experiences you are bitter about. I think if you read through this thread you will see your comments are hurtful, there are a lot of women here who have been raped and have failed to get a conviction, and there are some who wouldn't even consider the prospect of reporting it because they know what the conviction rate is and what an ordeal women who have been raped have to go through in a court situation, her sexuality is on trial, not the vicious vile rapists attack. I think while you are entitled to hold your own views on it, you should notpost them here, I hope the women who have been affected by the horrific crime that is rape can overlook this.
