If you were raped would you report it?

A topical question.

I didn't in the past because I was in denial.

For the sake of my privacy I still wouldn't now. It'd make me feel so guilty leaving someone to go free and maybe do it again but psychologically I coudln't cope with a court case and all that goes with it.

AlisonCupCake, wrong thread.

bemybebe · 25/10/2011 23:33

Nice debut CupCake keep jogging.

carpetmistress · 25/10/2011 23:37

Allison has a point. Men do get falsely accused and people need to be aware of it

AmberLeaf · 25/10/2011 23:39

carpetmistress, do they need to be aware of it on this thread?

Ive just slowly read all of this thread and was about to post on it until I got to page 13.

AlisonCupCake should've started a new thread.

KRITIQ · 25/10/2011 23:40

As you ignored my post about the impact of false allegations for other crimes and still failed to post any credible citations for your claims (in fact the first one includes data that undermines your points!), I'll take it as read that you're just here to stomp and wave a big flag, have no interest in genuine engagement, so worth, well, worth ignoring. Yeah.

This thread is about women who have been raped.

Go away.

ByThePowerOfGreyskullsOnIpad · 25/10/2011 23:51

men do get falsley accused of rape, but i and my dh have talked about this, he would much prefer to face due diligence in a court for a false accusation than know that rapists are going free because of the fear a victim has about the legal system not being supportive.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/10/2011 23:54

Carpetmistress - why does wanting rapists charged and imprisoned make anyone a radical feminist? I would think it just makes them a human being.

If anyone is 'hardened' it is people who can read some of the personal and painful accounts on this thread, and can then post what you and CupCake have posted. Have you no concern or heart whatsoever for the women on this thread who have been raped?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/10/2011 23:56

And you should consider the fact that a proportion (who knows how large a proportion) of the 'false' rape allegations are going to be where the woman has retracted the accusation because she's been threatened or because she is getting little or no support from her friends or family, or because people do not believe her - AND ALL THAT MEANS IS THAT SHE WITHDREW THE ALLEGATION - IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THE ALLEGATION WAS FALSE!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/10/2011 23:58

When I say 'a proportion of the 'false' rape allegations', I am referring to those which have been classified as false, but which may well, as I suggested above, not be false, but the victim has retracted her statement for other reasons.

MonstrouslyNarkyPuffin · 26/10/2011 00:00

Welcome to MN CarpetMistress. Your second day, yet you've only posted in feminism and seem to know a poster who hasn't been here for weeks.

MonstrouslyNarkyPuffin · 26/10/2011 00:02

Apparently suggesting that anyone other than men who lurk in dark alleys are could be rapists is being a 'rad fem'.

AmberLeaf · 26/10/2011 00:08

More men lie about not being rapists than women lie about being raped.

bemybebe · 26/10/2011 00:22

I didn't report my 3-strangers at night rape and neither did my friend who was drugged by a guy from her course at university. We had our reasons. Both were rapes, both devastating and both unreported.

And please remember to NOT FEED THE TROLLS... every time you do they get bigger and bigger and more vile in character.

bemybebe · 26/10/2011 00:23
carpetmistress · 26/10/2011 09:11

as usual there are accusations of trolling. You need to realise that because someone has a different POV they are not by default a troll

KRITIQ · 26/10/2011 10:08

Indeed bemybebe. Save the pizza for the nice people. :)

PamBeesly · 26/10/2011 11:15

Yes but then I'd have to report myself for murder. Bastards.

Wooooooooooooooppity · 26/10/2011 11:33

I love this "just because someone has a different POV doesn't mean they're trolling" crap.

From someone who is obviously a namechanger and has come onto this thread to talk about false allegations of rape, rather than rape, because men being falsely accused, even though it's rare, always has to be considered more important than women being raped, even though that's really common (1 in 9 of us remember).

I wonder how these lunatics who are so concerned about men being falsely accused of rape, feel about men who get raped? Do they think that most rape allegations by men are false as well? Or is it just women who are hysterical liars, can men who say they are raped be trusted as much as the average victim of burglary?

Wooooooooooooooppity · 26/10/2011 11:36

And a "different POV" on a thread about whether women would report rape or not.

The different POV, is that women should STFU when they're raped, stop whingeing about it and just accept the fact that men can rape us whenever they feel like it and as long as it's not down a dark alley and they haven't been previously introduced to us, it's OK.

So FFS women, stop whingeing about rape. Don't report it, because you're making a big fat fuss about nothing.

They are so alarmed by the prospect of not being allowed to rape us with impunity aren't they?

Graciescotland · 26/10/2011 11:44

It's awful but I really don't know. If I was raped by a stranger on a street then yes. However if it was someone I knew then it'd be incredibly hard given the conviction rate/ traditional treatment of women in that scenario.

If someone hit me or stole from me I'd report no matter what the circumstances...

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/10/2011 11:51

I am not surprised that carpetmistress has utterly ignored my points from last night - she hasn't tried to explain why someone who wants rapists caught and imprisoned is a 'radical feminist' rather than simply a human being. Nor has she explained how anyone with a heart can read the accounts of rapes posted on this thread and then start throwing around the 'false rape accusations' shit.

And of course she won't want to address the issue that some (who knows how many) of the 'false rape' accusations will be genuine rape victims who have withdrawn their accusation because of outside pressure, or because they are not being believed either by the police or by their friends and family, or because they haven't got the support they need to go through this traumatic process.

As I said - just because an allegation is withdrawn, that doesn't mean it was false.

Carpetmistress - do you think it is an easy thing to report a rape? To undergo deeply intimate questioning by the police, and then a full physical examination for rape? People here and elsewhere have said that it was as bad or worse than the original rape - so why the hell would anyone believe that lots of women are happily putting themselves through all this, just to make a malicious accusation? It beggars belief, frankly.
