Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Today I noticed 'Morrisons' put their copies of 'FHM' and 'Nuts in boxes so the front covers can't be seen.

I'm not someone who frequents this topic but was curious as to how this would be seen, especially in this topic?

Personally I welcome it, I have no problem with te naked body but the way women are presented in these magazines makes me feel queasy.

DH asked, when I told him, if the papers were still on show, the ones with topless women on the front, but TBH I didn't look.

Seems like a good idea to me.

AliceWorld · 30/09/2010 15:41

Great news! No nothing to do with the naked body, all the way it is objectified in these magazines for me too.

Whereabouts in the country are you?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 15:42

Sounds great - whatever your attitude to porny stuff that people access by choice, having pictures like that all over the shops where they're pushed in your face is just wrong.

TotorosOcarina · 30/09/2010 15:42

I'm in Manchester, it was the Chorlton branch.

There were 2 white plastic stands in with all the other magazines and they just said in large black print FHM with the magazines inside.

progress!
I hope this is standard across all Morrisons.
And if they're doing it, it will make it easier to persuade other retailers.

AliceWorld · 30/09/2010 15:44

I'll have to check out my local Morrisons. Good on them if they are doing this. Grin

BooBooGlass · 30/09/2010 15:44

Good for them. That makes me respect Morrisons a lot tbh. Shame others can't follow suit

sethstarkaddersmum · 30/09/2010 15:46

LOL @ all the feminists rushing to Morrisons Grin

they do nice pies.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 15:47

and bread :o

BooBooGlass · 30/09/2010 15:49

And elephants, the butter to go on said bread is divine. I was there yesterday and picked up their finest (or equivelant) butter with big chunks of salt in. To die for.
But I digress..

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 15:52

What do you think about sending a quick email to say a) how great b) hope all other branches are doing the same and c) how we'll be going there from now on because of the butter bread pies boxes?

CMOTdibbler · 30/09/2010 15:54

The Sainsburys I go to does this too - all the magazines with nudity on their front covers are obscured with just the name/logo on the plastic in front. And are on a high shelf

KittyTwoShoes · 30/09/2010 16:03

Good for Morrisons. I was going to pop to ASDA later but I'll go to Morrisons instead now, even though it's much further away.

Definitely a good idea about the email, Elephants.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 16:17

Feedback Form if anyone wants to get in touch.

Nice to be writing a letter to say something positive for a change.

Then we can all get hold of our local tescos/asda etc and berate them with it :o

AnyFucker · 30/09/2010 16:26

have written to Morrison's, registering my approval

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 16:28

Hello

I'm writing to say how pleased I am that the Chorlton branch of Morrisons has got the copies of Nuts, FHM etc covered up in boxes. As a normal shopper who doesn't really like to be confronted with explicit pictures when doing my shopping, this means I'll be shopping at Morrisons from now on.

Can you tell me whether you'll be rolling this out to all your stores?

Congratulations on making an ethical choice that means that children and adults aren't faced with these images in your shop.

Kind regards

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 16:28

me too AF - just posted that in case anyone needs inspiration.

AnyFucker · 30/09/2010 16:31

I said something similar about congratulating them on their family-friendly policies

AnyFucker · 30/09/2010 16:31

They get biiiiig ticks in their corporate boxes you see, for "family-friendly policies"

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/09/2010 16:40

trying to find tescos feedback email to give them a bollocking now...anyone got it?

AnyFucker · 30/09/2010 16:50
