Hello

Been saying for ages that it'd be nice to have an area for just saying hi, letting off some steam and sharing the little things that don't warrant a whole thread.

So, I'll start...

My brother made me :o:o:o last night when we were talking about some crap sexist song. And he said (in all honesty) - well this is just one of the millions of ways the patriarchy keeps itself going.

Also got the updated email from the Feminism in London conference this morning - can't wait.

Anyone else?

We went to a pirate party a couple of years ago, for adults, and I was the only dressed as a girl pirate.

It was a generic 16-19th century peasant costume - maxi skirt and white lacy nightshirt, with a leather belt, headscarf and big earrings.

I believe Disney produce costumes for each of their famous princesses, including Cinderella who wore blue (?) I remember my cousin having one, might be worth checking out. Grin

Ha! DH just independently suggested pirate princess! Job done.

Incidentally I noticed that earlier I said she could wear her party frock. Because of course she has a party frock or 2, all little girls have a party frock, don't they...

So a princess outfit, oh dear me no, a pretty girly party frock, yes why not?

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 14/10/2010 22:01

I fairly frequently go to parties dressed as a pirate [don't ask] and dresses aren't involved. You just need rolled up trousers (usually black) with boots, or with tights underneath (to cover lower leg)and flat shoes. Flouncy blouse with waistcoat over top or big brooch thing on. Neckscarf. Eyepatch. Plenty of flashy jewellery. Cutlass. Lots of ha-haing.

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 14/10/2010 22:03

Although having siad that Superhero Princess! I think so!

sethstarkaddersmummyreturns · 14/10/2010 22:04

my dd's reception teachers dressed up as pirates for World Book Day.
they were so unbelievably cool.

wukterWOOO · 14/10/2010 23:56

Incredibly intrigued by EAM's frequent attendance at parties dressed as a pirate.

tortoiseonthepumpkinshell · 15/10/2010 06:39

Yes, sorry, EvilAnts, I'm going to ignore the "don't ask" part of your post and do just that.

Pogleswooooo · 15/10/2010 09:46

I want to know too! Come on - tell us all...

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 15/10/2010 10:02

Damn you all! It's not my job or anything :o

I just happen to come from a part of the country very much associated with pirates, and as such there are a lot of pirate parties (some of them on boats). And my friends from other parts of the country generally suspect me of being a pirate anyway so it's nice ot play up to it sometimes :)

sethstarkaddersmummyreturns · 15/10/2010 10:40

Don't you mean 'Damn your eyes you scurvy seadogs'?

DS1 just asked me if he can be a pirate when he grows up Hmm

I explained why he couldn't and he said 'But Pippi Longstocking says she's going to be one when she grows up.'

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 15/10/2010 11:55

Any more o' that traitor's talk Sethstarkadder'slandlubber and you'll be tied to the mast for the seagulls to peck at, ha haaaarr.

Can you imagine the burglary squad having to make belief in the victim of the crime the focus of their efforts.

if the way they investigated homicide was anything like the way they investigate rape it would look something like this:
Body found on the floor, face down, knife-wounds in the back and knife sticking out. Trail of bloody footprints leads away from the scene. 'Think we've found another suicide, Sarge.'

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 15/10/2010 18:29

Proles, the end of that sentence is "...because reported rapes in London have gone up by 1/3".

It's brilliant for them isn't it, if fewer people come forward - hooray, fewer rapes! And if more people come forward (like, a fuck of a lot more) - yay, the police are more trusted (not "more rapes")!

Are people suggesting that the number of rapes might actually have gone up by 1/3? Has anyone asked the questions as to what on earth makes them think the police are being trusted more, in the wake of the Reid and Warboys cases?

Did you read this bit?

"Commander Simon Foy suggested more women were coming forward partly because of greater confidence in police but also because cases such as that of Worboys prompted greater awareness."

O H R E A L L Y?

maybe the police are recording more reported rapes as reported rapes rather than saying 'You don't really want to make a complaint do you love?'
because they are realising they could be in big trouble if they send women away without writing anything down and it turns out to be another Worboys.

EvilAntsAndMiasmas · 16/10/2010 00:24

You mean maybe they're writing the report down on an actual form, rather than the back of an old paper bag?

blackcurrants · 16/10/2010 02:36

Ahem, I know that this chat has recently got more serious and everythink, but did someone mention pirates? Cos this is how we celebrated 'talk like a pirate day' in our house. Grin
