We watched the news this morning where they showed the England hockey teams reaction to losing to Holland. Several players were crying and the goalkeeper just couldn't hold it together when she was being interviewed.

My point is how do I explain this to my ds? He says "football players never cry when they lose" and he's right isn't he? They cry a lot less anyway.

How can I explain this to him; that it doesn't mean they are weak?

Show him a YouTube clip of Gazza at the World Cup.

(I'd do a link, but I'm at work & YouTube is barred)

The Spanish footballers usually do.

Bayern Munich cried pretty much to a man when Man Utd beat them in the 1999 final. Must be on youtube

Ronaldo is a sniveller as well.

Just tell him that women have been allowed to cry in public and that it is an acceptable way to express themselves when they are sad, whereas men have not been allowed to so they tend not to so much. But that it's not weakness to express your sadness, it's better than bottling it up and then expressing it in another way like anger.

In this year's World Cup Ghana v. Uruguay quarter finals, players from both teams cried. The Ghanaian player who I think missed a penalty, stood sobbing on the pitch for what felt like ages. Hopefully someone else will know what I'm on about, as I have a bad memory for sports and never remember names.

some of the Ghana players cried after being knocked out of the World Cup. It is just a release of pent-up emotion. The players who cried really cared and gave it their all. The disappointment of losing is so great that they have to release the pent-up emotion through tears.
