Am I completely alone?

Started this thread but seem to be alone in my thinking...

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1019706-To-be-a-bit-shocked-by-The-Inbetweeners

Is there anyone here who would support me on this?

you are not completely alone

I know the party line is "turn it off if you don't like it", but I do think programmes like this just reinforce the casual misogyny apparent all around us

and the fact that this programme is scheduled, and nobody really bats an eyelid, is just another example of it

AnyFucker · 11/08/2010 17:57

sorry not to answer on your original thread (I did see it), but posting it in AIBU just attracts the shit-stirrers, tbh

BranchingOut · 11/08/2010 19:13

Thanks, AF.

I saw the reaction to my post, then remembered the furore a couple of weeks back when a gas fitter had made a sleazy remark and wondered why nobody notices these double stardards. But if it is 'hilarious', then it is all somehow OK...

I also dislike the fact that if you object to something like this then it is easy to be portrayed as uncool/lacking in a sense of humour.

I know

but then you are preaching to the converted here Grin

I am sure I am seen as a frigid bitch because I object to my partner going to lap dancing establishments

but that's a whole other subject

and I don't give a shit Smile

claig · 11/08/2010 19:43

Just read the thread. I agree with you. You've still got standards. This drip drip sexist and crude propaganda is slowly influencing people so that they think that it is normal. It is not just this programme, but so many others that contain similar language. It's just going to get worse and worse until it gets so bad that eventually the pendulum will swing back.

TrillianAstra · 11/08/2010 19:45

Remeber the AIBU disclaimer: Please bear in mind that this topic encourages posters to give their opinions - i.e. they might disagree with you.

Even if everyone who was online at the correct time and saw the thread and chose to comment on it disagrees with you, that does not mean you are completely alone.

Posting in different areas of MN garners quite different types of discussion. It does seema little wimpy to come over here and say 'the mean girls don't agee with me' though.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/08/2010 19:50

Does it? Would you say the same if it was e.g. someone posting about autism going to the SN section and talking to the people there about it?

TrillianAstra · 11/08/2010 19:57

Okay then, replace wimpy with 'foolish to have posted in AIBU in the first place if that's not the kind of discussion you want'.

claig · 11/08/2010 20:05

I think the OP wants to know if she is the only one who feels this way, since the AIBU posters all thought it was hilarious stuff. Loads of us disagree and think that it is puerile, tasteless, crude, sexist crap. The OP probably thinks she is alone in finding it tasteless, but many of us agree with her.

TrillianAstra · 11/08/2010 20:09

But why is it necessary to start a new thread (with a rather unhelpful title) in order to find this out?

My post largely said what AF said in a different way - "AIBU attracts the shit-stirrers" - in AIBU the question was 'Am I being unreasonable to be shocked' and everyone who posts in AIBU (note that this is a subset of MNers) thought it was not that shocking.

If you want to have a proper discussion of the misogyny in teen television (although this is actually an 18-rated show) then AIBU is not the best place to do it.

AnyFucker · 11/08/2010 20:26

I think OP was just a bit confuddled that she didn't really get a range of opinions

I would have replied in AIBU, but tbh, I am getting a bit sick of the shit I get on those kinda threads for daring to object to casual misogyny

and I don't think I can be the only one

BranchingOut · 11/08/2010 20:32

Well, I am fairly new to MN so don't know the ins and outs of the different 'crowds' on each forum.

However, the reception I got on AIBU had led to a smidgeon of self-doubt and wondering if I was the only person out there thinking this, so came over here to see if anyone had similar views...

However, I do not think it is fair to call me 'wimpy'.

OP posts:
claig · 11/08/2010 20:33

I think the OP was probably surprised that no one saw her point of view on AIBU. She probably started questioning her sanity and wanted to be reassured that she wasn't alone in finding it tasteless. This is how this drip drip propaganda works. People feel that they must be strange if they find it offensive, so they start treating it as normal. Everybody goes along with it and anyone who thinks differently is uncool and no one dares say that the emperor has no clothes. I think MN is all about sharing and seeing if people have similar or different views. The OP was probably astounded that she was alone, and just wanted to do a final check here to see if she would also have to start pretending that it was funny and that the emperor had a splendid set of clothes.

BranchingOut · 11/08/2010 20:35

Thanks, Claig, AF and others. Reassured that my sanity and reasonableness is still intact!

Keep standing up against this crap, otherwise we will all sink into the sewer.

ISNT · 11/08/2010 20:49

Haven't seen this prog, but saw an ad for something the other day which is new apparently, with a man going around and there are two men in his head doing a commentary... I didn't watch it as it looked a bit odd and wonder if anyone has seen it and if it was as random as I thought. In the ad the two blokes are commentating on him trying to take a woman's bra off and things like that, it was a bit Hmm

AnyFucker · 11/08/2010 21:00

yup, it's like the fable of The Emperor's New Clothes

well.... I see you, and you are fucking naked, Mr Emperor

that felt good Grin

Janos · 11/08/2010 22:14

Blimey.

My sister recommended this programme to me and said I would find it hilarious!

Based on this thread it just sounds grim.

Janos · 11/08/2010 22:18

And, come to think of it, what is it with comedies based around the inner life of inadequate men?

It's as if their every tedious thought and utterance is the utmost in hilarity.

FFS.

I say this as someone who has a fairly puerile sense of humour too.

AnyFucker · 11/08/2010 22:22

janos, it is awful, believe me

and I am not easily shocked

ISNT...that prog you referred to isn't actually that bad...nowhere near as bad as The Imbetweeners, anyway

yes, Pete vs Life was a bit crap

The Inbetweeners is offensive shit Smile

earwicga · 12/08/2010 18:14

It's a shame what has happened to the Inbetweeners. The first series was absolutely brilliant. The second one pissed me off big time - I watched the box set and kept hoping for it go get better, but it didn't. Won't be watching it again.
