The OP’s post is based on one newspaper article, which is based on one study, which found high levels of a particular chemical in one single box of tampons (of an undisclosed brand).

It is not possible to draw the conclusion from that that there is a “huge level of toxicity in tampons”. Hence, it’s nonsense.

This plus I doubt the lack of bias on the part of the the people who produced the report and "did their own research"

FeatherDawn · 30/05/2025 21:55

I stopped using them for economic reasons plus the pads were scented at the time but also there was the massive court case involving talc manufacturers due to ovarian cancers as a result of using talc in the genital area.
I really didn't think cotton fibres from tampons was a great idea.

Hoooolllld on. If you go to the organisation’s own website about this, they say they tested 15 boxes of tampons and highlight particularly high levels of the pesticide in one of them. It doesn’t say what they found in the other 14 boxes.

If they want to protect women’s health, why not say which were the brands with lower levels so people can choose?

This feels like a piece of ‘research’ used selectively to support a particular campaign message, rather than something that should dictate what we put up our fanjos.

This. They need to tell us the brand rather than have us all worrying about absorbing pesticides through our vag!

Sigh

Sadly I have reason to have researched the chemical exposures that are attributed to Parkinson’s disease. This chemical is one of them. Other posters have kindly pointed out that this chemical exposure via tampon has been discounted as a cause of this horrible disease, the actual chemical is still a suggested contributing factor. So your passive aggressive Sigh hasn’t been well received.

sundaybloodysunday12 · 30/05/2025 23:03

To be honest, I don’t think a piece of cotton wedged up next to your cervix is ever going to be great.

But yes, obviously this is complety unacceptable. Swept under the carpet until now as it’s a woman’s issue, no doubt.

I have only ever used tampons very sporadically. Love the idea of mooncups but just never got on with them. I use period pants or reusable washable pads, which I love.

LogicalBlodge · 30/05/2025 23:38

If you are concerned about this the Yuka app is worth a look as it highlights all the potentially harmful products in beauty products like moisturiser, cleanser etc.

@Liondoesntsleepatnight
Hello so sorry, I wasn't being passive aggressive. I think you have misunderstood. I was sighing as im gutted as that link to Parkinson is dreadful. Like I've said in previous posts I use tampons and it's such a blimmin shame. I'm sorry if it came across that way it was actually the opposite reaction I was having. I just feel sigh about the whole thing as it's too late now as I've been using Tampax since I was 15 (I'm 45) x

Tampons have been around for decades and are cotton, I think that if there was something significant affecting our health, we would have known by now. I'd rather put a tampon inside my body rather than a piece of plastic to be honest. My instinct tells me that having a piece of plastic inside me is not a good idea..

Mooncups are made from medical grade silicone, not plastic.

Women’s Reproductive Health hasn’t ever been a medical research priority. It’s recognised that it’s been underfunded and overlooked compared to other medical research.

Companies like P&G who own the Tampax brand prioritise wealth and not health. Even governments regard these products as “luxury items” making them more expensive (remember tampon tax?) so they are treated as consumer goods and huge profits are made from them.

Things are very slowly changing now though, so I won’t be at all surprised if evidence emerges that tampons have sinister effects.

Exactly
I found that the effect of the silicone meant that it emptied very clean, if that makes sense, so if there was no single cubicle then , empty in the loo, wipe with loo roll then reinsert.
I always washed my hands first though.
It was so easy and convenient not the blood bath others make out!

natalieplusone · 01/06/2025 10:12

I had never heard of moon cups till this thread!!!

What rock have you been living under?

What rock have you been living under?

No need for rudeness.

I can quite believe it actually - Tampax has the absolute monopoly and it’s not as if these things are widely advertised.

FeatherDawn · 01/06/2025 17:30

Well quite
They don't want you buying a product that then lasts you the rest of your menstrual life, they want you buying their expensive products.
Mine cost £18 about 20 odd years ago,now redundant hurrah
I still use the washable liners I got to go with it.

Let's say the average woman uses £5 of tampax and towels per month
£60 per year x 20 =£1200

Moon/ Diva cup -now £20 - Amazon today
Can't believe it's almost the same price!
£20 plus £20-30for reusable organic cotton pad/ liners.
£50 at most plus washing

Yeah there's a reason they aren't advertised!

I haven’t had periods for years (PCOS) and when I did/do I’m a pad/tampon girl but I have seen dozens of ads on social media, articles in magazines/newspapers and tens of threads on here about period pants , mooncups and reusable pads. It’s not exactly a hidden/new item.

NinetyPercent · 01/06/2025 20:46

applegingermint · 30/05/2025 06:11

I just use organic tampons (Natracare).
https://www.natracare.com/blog/tampon-study-shows-toxic-pesticides/

Unfortunately childbirth and ageing don’t make everyone a suitable candidate for a menstrual cup. Was fine pre kids, distinctly not fine post kids even after pelvic floor physio. I end up in agony after a few hours.

Edited

Yes me too. Can’t use a mooncup for various reasons - don’t try to persuade me please anyone - but assume Natracare is ok. Tried to click through the report and impossible to find out the brands of tampons tested.

Feel a bit put out at other posters surprised ‘anyone still uses tampons’. Bit unfair! I like to swim and can’t use a cup so…

SlaveToMyFanny · 01/06/2025 22:22

I've spent a fortune on period pants, so I don't think they've worked out cheaper than tampons for me. But I do prefer them to putting something inside my body.

natalieplusone · 03/06/2025 15:27

@WhenYouSayNothingAtAll
Because I just click and order tampons nothing else with my shopping and have used them since 1995, nothing else. I don't stand there looking at what other items there are as I have so far been happy with tampons. No reason for me to look into it.

Also I don't recall ever seeing tv adverts for moon cups? Have you?
