Shooting Pain Up Bum!

GrimTimes1 · 23/11/2024 13:20

This is so embarrassing to write never mind speak to a dr.

for a could of years during my period now, I've had really bad shooting pains up my bum, particularly during bowel movements. It's been painful but bareable. However my period started the other day and it's been a million times worse this month.
Im getting random shooting pains up my bum that are literally stopping me in my tracks. I can't walk or have a conversation.
fortunately its the weekend and I'm not at work (I'm a teacher so honestly no idea what i would do).
The BMs have been much worse as well. Last night I honestly thought I was going to pass out from the pain and then it passed.

Im wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this and if there's anything I can do about it? There are no Drs open at the weekend.
I'm 38 and have had 3 children. I've never had issues with my periods like this before.
if anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Piles.

Rattai · 23/11/2024 13:21

You are not alone
Its referred to as javelin arse

JimPanzee · 23/11/2024 13:23

I've only learned the name this from MN - Javelin Arse.
Sorry you're suffering OP.

Slol · 23/11/2024 13:26

Ugh yeah it’s awful, I think it’s normal tho 🙈

GrimTimes1 · 23/11/2024 13:27

It can't be normal to not be able to function during your periods surely?

OP posts:
MooseBeTimeForSnow · 23/11/2024 13:28

Ah. Javelin Arse. Its proper name is Proctalgia Fugax.

ByLilacMember · 23/11/2024 13:29

I had this sensation, anal fissure. Get GP to have a look. Piles don't hurt unless they embolise, fissures stab! It stopped me breastfeeding!

TTPDTS · 23/11/2024 13:30

I get them!! It's literally horrendous, have to stop what I'm doing. It happened when driving once and I'm so shocked I managed to continue driving!

Mine is linked to Endo / PCOS though, do you have any issues like that?

It’s not not to be able to function on your periods, I agree.
if that is the case then go to your GP.

wizzbitt · 23/11/2024 13:32

God yes. I used to suffer from this. I didn't realise it had a MN name or a proper name. With me it just settled over time but I should have gone to the dr.

Nope, nothing like that here. Literally just when I'm on my period and that's it.
Last night was actually horrific. Previously a BM would give some relief but last night it was actually worse after.
I will get to my GP but suspect I'll be fobbed off.

I agree! 🤣

At least when you go to the GP you can tell him what it is🤣

Jifmicroliquid · 23/11/2024 13:37

I refer to it as Jabby bum 😂

No, it’s not.

What you are describing is a fairly classic symptom of endometriosis.

I used to get it when I was ovulating , it has to be one of the most awful pains ever . The only way I could ease it was by sitting up on something hard/firm or by pushing on the perineum ? That also relieved the pain .
Do get yourself checked out by a doctor though just incase x

I did wonder about this but I don't experience pain during sex at all. I'm not sure if this is a symptom that happens in all cases.

TitusMoan · 23/11/2024 13:46

HRT gave me this. Awful. I would get to the doctor, no one should be putting up with this.

Hope2025 · 23/11/2024 13:46

Shooting pains during bowel movements on your period is highly suggestive of rectovaginal endometriosis. The pain is the poop passing by the patch/es of endometriosis on your bowel. I would ask your GP for referral to gynaecology but, sadly, anticipate a long wait for an exploratory laparoscopy.

Edit to add - you don’t need to experience pain during sex to have endo. In fact it is a misconception that the greater the pain, the more advanced the endo. You can have stage 4 and have very mild periods and few symptoms. Google silent endometriosis.

(ask me how I know!)

Best of luck in getting it sorted.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/11/2024 13:49

I woke up this week with a pain just like this. I was nearly crying with it. Horrendous pain. I tried to have my BO with no success and no relief. I took plenty of painkillers and finally got back to sleep.

i take the pill continuously so it’s not associated with periods and don’t have endometriosis.

it does sound exactly like Proctalgia Fugax which I’ve never heard of before. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proctalgia_fugax

Bornnotbourne · 23/11/2024 13:54

I’ve got stage 4 Endo and never once experienced pain during sex… although have had javelin bum before I went on treatment. It used to stop me walking anywhere . Or sitting down.. fun times

See, I just love Mumsnet for the stuff you learn on here.

The phrase ' Every day is a school day' should be changed to 'Every day is a Mumsnet day.' 😁

GG1986 · 23/11/2024 14:15

Mine is linked to endometriosis, so it could be that.

Pinkypie86 · 23/11/2024 14:22

'Shooty bum bum pain' that's how I refer to it.
Sympathies...
I don't have endo or anything like that either, AFAIK.
I just put it down to being a woman. Yay. 🙄
