Shooting Pain Up Bum!

GrimTimes1 · 23/11/2024 13:20

This is so embarrassing to write never mind speak to a dr.

for a could of years during my period now, I've had really bad shooting pains up my bum, particularly during bowel movements. It's been painful but bareable. However my period started the other day and it's been a million times worse this month.
Im getting random shooting pains up my bum that are literally stopping me in my tracks. I can't walk or have a conversation.
fortunately its the weekend and I'm not at work (I'm a teacher so honestly no idea what i would do).
The BMs have been much worse as well. Last night I honestly thought I was going to pass out from the pain and then it passed.

Im wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this and if there's anything I can do about it? There are no Drs open at the weekend.
I'm 38 and have had 3 children. I've never had issues with my periods like this before.
if anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

I get it after running sometimes, and also just occasionally wake up in the night with it. It's horrendous. Apparently taking a dose of ventolin can help- have a google and give it a try if you have any in the house

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 23/11/2024 14:24

I don't have endometriosis by the way- have had laparoscopic investigation as part of fertility treatment

Javelin arse, it's a Mumsnet institution

I found out about this about 6 years ago

Right, I’m off to look in the bottom of ds’s school bag! I honestly can’t remember the last time he needed his Ventolin. It’s probably out of date though!

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 23/11/2024 15:45

Can't imagine it goes off!

fatphalange · 24/11/2024 11:53

Javelin arse is the worst! Ditto fanny daggers although I've only had that once or twice.
The first time it happened it made me jump out of my seat into a standing position and then I had to play it off as I'd suddenly had an idea 🤣

Namerchangee · 24/11/2024 11:58

I have this! Never knew it was called JA or Proctalgia Fugax. It doesn’t happen often and I’ve never established a link between my cycle and the pain but man, it really does stop you in your tracks. My auntie had it and one thing that helped her was to sit down on her fist (yes, I know that sounds weird 🤣) but it stopped it almost instantly. It’s helped me too.

thegrapesofgrath · 24/11/2024 12:05

Yep javelin arse sufferer here too. Was delighted to discover on mumsnet that it has a name and I'm not alone!! Mine is sporadic, not every month but sometimes a few times in one day.

ffsfindmeausername · 24/11/2024 12:05

it sounds like what's we call javelin arse on mumsnet! I've had this myself and yes it's bloody awful. there are a few javelin arse threads on mumsnet. when I have an attack of JA I just breath through it, very similar to being in labour tbh. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with an attack of JA which is awful and the pain can be very strong.

Singasongofsixpence24 · 24/11/2024 12:15

Do not let you self get dehydrated and when it does happen breathing helps.
Deep breath in and panting breaths out for as long as you can manage. Just keep repeating.

Breathing is all I can do when it happens! I would honestly say the pain is worse than labour at its worst!
It does make me feel a little better that this is more common that I realised but omg, I need it to stop!!

This could well be due to endometriosis being present. Shooting pains/javelin arse is a feature of endometriosis.

any symptoms that are cyclical in nature and or get worse up to and including menses should be checked for endometriosis

chicalina · 25/11/2024 20:50

I have been getting this OP - every now and again over the last year, not linked to period I think, and yes it's excruciating. I did a bit of research and found out it can be linked to prolapse. I just had a prolapse diagnosed last week. I've also had three children and am generally fit and well. Feel a bit devastated at the prolapse tbh, but the two can be linked. Hope you get some relief. I have to breathe through it and walk it off. Hugs to you

LBFseBrom · 25/11/2024 21:00

I've had quite a lot, it's horrible. Nothing to do with my periods because I am well past having those :-). I like the 'javelin arse' name, it fits.

SabreIsMyFave · 25/11/2024 21:03

Yep, javelin arse, or shooty bum! Also (as someone said) dagger fanny! (Same stabby feeling - but up the vagina) occurs occasionally too.

And yes it is

From google...

Proctalgia fugax is a sharp, sudden pain you feel in your anus. It can last from seconds to minutes. Many people with this condition have recurring pain episodes. Causes may include muscle spasms in your anal sphincter or issues with nearby nerves.

So yeah that. ^ Also piles can cause pains up the bum, but this pain often isn't piles.

It's quite a terrible pain! And it tended to come along when I was menstruating, but also when I needed a poo (when I was menstruating.)

DH gets it now and again, so looks like it's not just a woman thing! (Women get it more though!) As pps have said, long heavy breaths in and out do help.

Have to say, I have not suffered 'javelin arse' since my periods stopped some 5 years ago.

Ugh yeah it’s awful, I think it’s normal tho 🙈

Please don't give this sort of advice. It's nit normal- it's a known red flag for endometriosis with deep-infiltrating bowel involvement.
OpP, please ask for a gynae referral to an endometriosis specialist.

GrimTimes1 · 14/01/2025 10:04

I know it's been a while since I posted but wanted to update after seeing my dr (had to wait a horrendous time for a GP appointment) and was basically told to take brufen during my periods to "reduce" the intensity of what I've been experiencing.
the Dr did a physical exam but basically said if brufen doesn't do anything then I just need to put up with it.

I did query rectal endometriosis particularly and was told that the bowel was smooth with no evidence of this.

Dr told me that what I've described is not consistent with endometriosis
