Reporting back after my hysteroscopy (and biopsy) under GA yesterday. It went OK, though I won't know the outcome until I get the pathology results.

I woke up in recovery to a surprising amount of pain (like labour cramps) which continued into the night at home. Luckily the recovery nurses were generous with pain relief and I have a stockpile of the good stuff at home from previous incidents. The recommended paracetamol, ibuprofen and a heat pack wouldn't have touched the sides.

I'm fine today (it's Wednesday afternoon here), virtually no pain, minimal bleeding. A bit stingy at the vaginal opening.

Do you have a date yet @MrBallensWife?

Droolylabradors · 24/07/2024 07:12

@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice I'm glad you feel a bit better. Agree that the pain is unexpectedly brutal. I was told 'mild period pains' but needed codeine. They didn't give me anything but paracetemol in hospital (private!)

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 24/07/2024 08:05

They gave me fentanyl in hospital, which did the trick! This is in the Australian public system - a specialist women's hospital, the care has been absolutely outstanding.

Oh no 😢,that sounds awful for you, glad you're a lot better today.Im certainly not looking forward to it,especially if it's like labour's pains. Were you discharged the same day?
I'm still awaiting a date for mine,I'm hoping it's going to be soon though just to get it over and done with.
Fingers crossed for a good result from your biopsy.Thankyou for updating x

All they seem to throw at us here in the UK is Paracetamol!.

It was a same day procedure, the day is a bit of a blur but at a guess I'd say I was discharged about 2 hours after waking up.

I hope you get your appointment soon! Waiting is the worst bit.

Bella7819 · 25/07/2024 16:03

Hi, I had a hysteroscopy and coil fitted four weeks ago. The consultant told me , no heavy lifting , swimming or sex for eight weeks . Has anyone else been told this because I can’t see this information anywhere else ?
thank you

Droolylabradors · 25/07/2024 20:06

Wtaf? I was told no sex for a week and that was it. I was straight back to my weight lifting and swimming a week later.

Bella7819 · 25/07/2024 22:24

I did think it was a bit excessive, it must be wrong !

I was told (this Tuesday) 'nothing in your vagina for 2 weeks'. Including water from swimming, baths.

I've had my appointment come through the post today for Monday 19th August but I already have a hospital appointment that day to see another surgeon for a separate issue 😒,of all the bloody days they could have given me!!,I will have to ring and try to change the date for the Hysteroscopy.
Has everything settled down now for you?x

Argh I hope they can sort something out for you?

Unfortunately, not exactly settled here no. SO much bleeding, it's making me so miserable as I've been bleeding for months, finally had it under control with progestin and now this bloody procedure, which was meant to find the cause, has kicked it all off again. Luckily they gave me the whole week off work.

Rarewaxwing · 26/07/2024 11:59

I bled for a week after my hysteroscopy. As I'd been bleeding anyway (caused by a polyp, now removed), I was used to it - but it's annoying. Also, I have to take iron supplements all the time.

However, thankfully, I have just stopped bleeding at last. So I assume that was just the post-op bleeding and hope that's an end to it. The surgeon hadn't warned me that the bleeding would continue (on the contrary, he said it would stop), so it might be useful for people to know.

I had a good result about the biopsy on the polyp - all clear. Very relieved.

OP - I hope you get another appointment soon. It's so frustrating that the date clashed with your other appointment.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 27/07/2024 03:36

That's great news re: the biopsy result @Rarewaxwing , you must be so relieved! And thanks for the reassurance that the bleeding will calm down eventually.

MrBallensWife · 27/08/2024 13:01

Hi everyone,just a quick update!
My hysteroscopy is this afternoon,I'm currently sat on a ward waiting for the anaesthatist to come and see me before I go down to theater.
I'm still shitting myself!

Good luck @MrBallensWife .

You did the right thing in advocating for yourself and waiting for the GA.
Hope you get your results quickly.

Tinytigertail · 27/08/2024 13:21

I had one a couple of weeks ago. So many people told me how awful they are, but that wasn't my experience. I had 2 ibuprofen a couple of hours beforehand. The gynaecologist had a bit of trouble as my uterus is retroverted but she talked me through what was happening, it was a bit ouchy for a few seconds and then fine. As others have said, the team were lovely and kept me chatting to keep my kind off it all as much as possible. Good luck!

lissie123 · 27/08/2024 13:23

Good luck. It will be over very soon and you will be finex

Movinghouseatlast · 27/08/2024 13:31

Don't worry, it really is a breeze with GA. I had it a month ago. My gynaecologist told me she refuses to do it without GA. You have made the right decision.

Welshstaffy · 28/08/2024 04:23

How did it go @MrBallensWife?

I'm wide awake in hospital after having the same procedure yesterday - just think - you could have been in the next bed to me lol

Unfortunately the procedure failed for me so I've been through all 3 options now and each time they have failed to get through my uterus. Confused

I have no pain whatsoever from the procedure but unfortunately my heart rate wouldn't come down below 100 bpm so they kept me in.

I will now be referred for an MRI scan so fingers crossed that comes through quickly and I get some answers.

Hope you had a better experience and are home tucked in bed

It went really well thankyou!,I left hospital at 10pm last night feeling right as rain!.
I didn't have a GA in the end though,I had heavy sedation, the Anaesthetist said I was a really high risk for a GA due to my BMI and strongly advised me to try heavy sedation first,he assured me that I wouldn't feel any pain with the cocktail of drugs he would give me and said I'd still be conscious enough to ask them to stop if I felt like it,or for him to increase pain relief if I needed it.He gave me a mix of sedatives and Fentanyl and I felt so chilled out and relaxed during the whole procedure and didn't feel any pain, just a lovely warm, floaty feeling lol.
I was super anxious about even having the canulla put in but he told me not to worry as he'd give me some local anaesthetic in my hand first so I wouldn't feel it,he held my hand and told me to cough and when I did he put the LA in my hand without me even realizing it,then the cannula which I didn't feel at all,he was absolutely brilliant and completely put me at ease and changed the whole experience for me.
I've got to wait a few weeks now for the results but they mentioned I may have to have an MRI too as my cervix can be quite difficult at times so they had a bit of a task on their hands to get the biopsies, they also took one from my cervix too as a precaution.I had some cramping for an hour afterwards but felt absolutely fine, they wanted to keep me in as my oxygen levels were a little low but they said I could go home in the end, thankfully!.
How are you feeling this morning? X

Welshstaffy · 28/08/2024 10:31

@MrBallensWife - I'm glad it went as well as could be expected and you were made to feel at ease Smile

My oxygen sats were low for a while too which has never happened to me before.

My procedure was abandoned as they have likely what is called created a false passage ... it's a rare event which they did warn me about and I had read about ... very frustrating! Basically they thought they were going in the right direction but got stuck and realised it was going nowhere and have therefore created a new passage which could now become infected so I've been prescribed antibiotics!

Just being discharged now so will update later

I was discharged at 10am and have been looked after by my adult daughter today which has been lovely! I couldn’t wait for a decent cup of coffee and a shower and have finally had a catch up nap - only an hour but so worth it!

On reflection I’m so disappointed that this third procedure failed. A team of 6 from the Gynae team came to discharge me and go through my understanding of what happened. I was gobsmacked that there were so many of them but from some of the questions it was clear that they did not know my whole history … crikey it’s not hard! Every time you are asked to summarise your issues … the least they can do is read the notes!

The next stage for me is MRI to assess the thickening and the polyp which really is tiny and I’m almost regretting reporting the bleed as the chief man today really played it down and said they may be able to attempt another biopsy via hysteroscopy - I couldn’t believe it!

That’s definitely my least favourite course of action so let’s see what the MRI brings eh?

Oh, and since home my heart rate is down to 80 odd so I’m well chuffed - seems like it was a side effect of the anaesthetic but I am going to try and make some changes to my lifestyle to reduce stress and anxiety 😊
