Am I over reacting? Feeling violated after smear test

DearSwan · 30/04/2024 00:25

I’ve just had my first smear test, and I’m really shaken up, I don’t know if I’m over reacting.

id watched some youtube videos just to get an idea about the process, they were all the typical go behind a curtain, undress from the waist down, small sheet to cover you, lie on the bed with legs in stirrups, exam takes about a minute, done and dusted.

mine was completely different - there was no curtain, so I had to get undressed infront of the doctor as she watched, and climb on the table with my downstairs exposed which I’m sure she’s used to but I already felt super embarrassed. There was no small sheet to cover me which I guess maybe isn’t always a thing anyway, There was no stirrups so just lay on my back and before I knew it she was trying to shove the speculum in, but was somehow completely missing the bullseye, and very forcefully jamming it into all areas of my downstairs barring my actual vagina. I’d say I have a high pain tolerance, broken several bones and hasn’t been that bad, but this was absolutely excruciating, I mean it genuinely felt like she’d gotten a knife and was stabbing me hard, she kept going in and out in and out and at this point I was writhing in pain, she didn’t stop she just kept going, like a stab in the dark literally. I told her to go further down because she was hitting my vulva and the pain was becoming unbearable at this point as she’d been at it for several minutes, but I wanted it over and done with because I knew if I’d gotten up and left then, then i wouldn’t have booked for another try.

when she did eventually get the speculum in it was just a shot in the dark and she shoved it in with such force I felt my entire insides scraped like carpet burn.

i know smear tests are very normal, but I can’t help but feel this wasn’t how it was meant to go, I understand it may not always be easy to find the right spot at first, but at least go slower or be gentle. There was blood on the table and me when she was done, and when I got home I was bleeding still and had bled through my underwear.

am I over reacting? I felt so shaken and light headed, now I just feel dirty and ashamed. It was so rough and agonising, I don’t know how the hell im going to convince myself to get one next time. I have thick skin when it comes to doctors and procedures, needles, surgery, blood you name it and it doesn’t phase me, so I know it was bad enough that it’s actually had an effect on me, but does this sound pretty standard for a first time smear test? Am I just being sensitive?

OP - don't take it personally. There are some sickos who do actually do this. They post online and then get off on the stories women tell. Obviously we have no way of knowing who you are. It will reports, investigated and mumsnet should contact you. It's horrible if you are genuine but remember there are plenty of people who really aren't sadly. Hopefully you've had some reassurance from the replies that what you went through wasn't normal. Make that complaint!

Trixiefirecracker · 30/04/2024 07:51

I have had many smears and some nurses/doctors are definitely not as good as others, same with injections! Having said that this sounds another level and I would report it too. Sorry you have experienced this .

WitsEnd10 · 30/04/2024 07:52

I don’t really understand what you mean by stabbing it around down there. Did she have her eyes closed? Otherwise, it’s fairly obvious where it goes, no? Either that or there’s something going on with you anatomy wise that isn’t the norm?

caringcarer · 30/04/2024 07:53

I've never had stirrups or a cloth to cover me or a curtain either. That said the nurse does it. You have to lie down with knees up then flop them open. She uses lube though and is not rough. I've never bled after having one done. They are uncomfortable when they put the spectrum thing in and ratchet you open though.

Freakinfraser · 30/04/2024 07:54

The no stirrups/sheet/curtain is quite common to be honest, but the rough treatment and bleeding is not. Far from it. I would complain.

huuskymam · 30/04/2024 08:02

I've had a few smear tests, my last one was very similar to yours(different doctor). I was left in pain for days, so dizzy that I had to phone my husband to collect me and leave the car where it was, and close to vomiting. All previous ones were fine so I'm just presuming it was this particular doctor. Don't let it put you off cause they are essential for women, but possibly find a different surgery or well woman's clinic.

I have been having smears since my 20’s and am in my 40’s now, I have never had a heath professional use stirrups for a smear or any other gynae appointment, more of a ankles together and drop knees to the side approach is used. However everything else you’ve mentioned is horrifying, and I would be writing to the practice manager and patient liaison if there is one!

I've had many smears. No stirrups. Definitely a cover and gp or nurse leave the room while I changed.

It's uncomfortable and I have bled a little but nothing like what you described.

I'd complain

Then can I suggest you get off this thread. Cannot believe some people actually think I’m lying about this for gods sake.

Well, imagine a vagina, then imagine the doctor prodding around it with force.

Hi all,
Many thanks to everyone who reported concerns about this thread without also trollhunting on it.
As you can see, we have been through the thread and deleted the trollhunting, and suspended several posters because of it.
MNers come here for peer support, not peer opprobrium, and with that in mind we'd really like everyone involved in the trollhunting on this thread to reflect on whether or not they have just participated in the public shaming of someone who has already been through a distressing experience.
That's what MNHQ believe has just happened, and we're frankly shocked to see it. If posters cannot contain themselves and can't leave MNHQ do our investigative work in the background, we will need to take more permanent steps with regards to posting privileges.
For the record, it may yet be that this poster requests that her thread be removed and we will likely comply in that event, so we would advise in advance that the trollhunters draw no victorious conclusion if it should go.
We would like to thank everyone on this thread who shared their experiences in order to make this poster feel less alone at an already isolating time.

Op the vagina is the inside tube leading from the vulva to the cervix, were they poking around there or the outside (vulva)?

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 30/04/2024 16:41

I would complain without a doubt. Were you offered a chaperone? I've never had stirrups, I've just been told to put knees up and let them drop but everything else you've said sounds awful.

There should be a curtain
She shouldn't have her eyes closed while trying to insert the speculum
She should go gently
She shouldn't rush you
She should offer you a sheet to cover you
A small amount of blood is normal, as is some in your underwear but even with my friends who do bleed, they've never mentioned blood on the table

Sorry you went through this Flowers

I find a lot of them seem to care less now and rush you. I had a coil fitted and it was butchery.

INeedToClingToSomething · 30/04/2024 18:32

This is not normal AT ALL. I have had numerous smears as am also old and have never had someone jabbing my vulva repeatedly as they couldn't find the hole to put it in.

Jesus. I'm surprised you let her carry on. I'd have got up and left although it's not my first smear so I know how it should go.

Smears at most are slightly uncomfortable, more so if you tense up while the speculum is being widened. There should no jabbing at all at any point and the speculum should just slide in. As PPs have says they are supposed to use live and have multiple sizes of speculum.

I would definitely make a complaint. Poor you.

chaticat · 30/04/2024 19:51

That sounds brutal OP. I'm so sorry. You should complain and ask not to be treated by that person again.

HauntedBungalow · 30/04/2024 22:20

OP are you saying that the doctor couldn't see your vagina? This is indeed very unusual and extremely worrying.

Enigma52 · 01/05/2024 15:41

Barbaric. Make a formal complaint to
the practice manager. You should not bleed after a smear, unless perhaps you have vaginal atrophy. I can't believe it; I'm so sorry. I wonder if any other women have had a similar experience, caused by this " medic " ?

Yes I worry she’s done/doing the same to others, I’ve made a formal complaint, I can’t change what happened to me but at least now hopefully it’ll prevent her doing the same to other women.

I wanted to get up and leave but I just thought if I leave now there’s no way in hell I can come back and do this again and I just wanted to get it over and done with. If it had lasted another minute I think I would’ve had to stop as it was unbearable x

This is absolutely appalling. Taking the OP's description at face value, it sounds like a brutal sexual assault. Smears are meant to be less invasive now as I think they have a new protocol and collecting instrument. Mine are occasionally mildly sting-y as the bottle brush up yer cervix is a bit yowchy! Sometimes it's fine. I do bleed a tiny bit from where they take the cells, apparently that's fine. I've NEVER bled from my vulva or perineum!!

I sometimes have a GP, sometimes a nurse, and they ALWAYS tell me what's about to happen, often ask if I'm good to go ahead, apologise for/warn about cold speculum (they're plastic now though, I think) or hands. If they think I'm in discomfort they ask if I want to stop. I am not watched while I take my pants off - as for any other pelvic exam, they whip the curtain round the exam table first.

OP's experience, as described, sounds like really bad practice and I'd urge her to make a formal complaint.

Jimjamjaroo · 03/05/2024 22:35

Makes me really sad to read this, I'm so sorry this was your experience OP.

Please do complain if you feel up to it.
