Please help me avoid the most embarrassing trip to A&E

My menstrual disc is stuck. Please help me. The instructions I find online don't work. I can't just get my finger under it and pull it out. I can barely reach it and bearing down doesn't change anything as it just goes back up again.
There's a little hook but it's pointing the wrong way so I can't use it. Can't grip the disc and can't get thumb or second finger up there. Squatting doesn't work either.

Really would advise against putting anything up there... tweezers could do some damage!

margegunderson · 05/12/2023 17:11

Something with a safe blunt hook at the end like a crochet hook (a large one so you don't damage yourself) might help pull it down a bit/loosen the suction. Just be very careful. Have you tried squatting in the shower and pushing down? Lying down?

mushroomushroom · 05/12/2023 17:13

I had this once with a menstrual cup rather than disc. Completely panicked and made my then boyfriend leave work early to come help me 😅 I managed to get it out myself about two minutes before he got home though!

Get in the bath (or shower) naked and squat like the yoga pose "malasana" (google it if you don't know it) and push down like you're going to do a poo, with your fingers inside yourself. By doing that it came down enough that I could break the vacuum and manage to get a grip on it.

If that doesn't work I would go to A&E. definitely do NOT use a tweezers!!!! You don't want to also have internal wounds on top of a stuck disc!!

MenopauseSucks · 05/12/2023 17:15

Do you have a walk-in centre that you could use?
If you do, it might be easier to get seen there than attempting to see your GP or even going to A&E.

LulooLemon · 05/12/2023 17:18

No to tweezers, wooden spoons and crochet hooks.

Just go to your doctor/nurse/hospital who will be able to get it out without causing damage to you. Good luck.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/12/2023 17:23

Try to breathe and relax, as the more you rummage the tighter the muscles hold it in place but do go to A&E if you can't as it can cause infection
I had to go to my gp surgery with a lost tampon string and they didn't even raise an eyebrow

Bluetrews25 · 05/12/2023 17:23

If you need to break the suction, then you could try guiding the handle of a teaspoon or dessert spoon up there and get it underneath then lever it away.....
Tweezers are shorter and more scratchy. The spoon handle is rounded and shouldn't gouge you.

LuckyCharmz · 05/12/2023 17:26

Latex gloves might help your to grip it?

JamieJ93 · 05/12/2023 17:26

Oh yes, I'm sure you'd rather have sepsis!
As it goes, I had sepsis and nearly had to have my left leg amputated,
What a stupid insensitive comment!!

IntheSnowySnowyMountains · 05/12/2023 17:29

If you're not in the U.K. do you have a gynae that you see regularly for check-ups? They are likely to have nurses working with them, especially if they're part of a medical centre. I'm sure they could help (and would have seen it all before). I have a gynae and would definitely call her office in your situation.

TheUltima · 05/12/2023 17:33

They have fished all sorts out of people, I really wouldn’t be worried about going to a&e with this

lovescats3 · 05/12/2023 17:34

There's nothing embarrassing and drs and nurses won't mind

therealcookiemonster · 05/12/2023 17:36

@Discsareshit under no circumstances stick tweezers into your vagina!!!! you will end up with a tear and probably a horrible infection.

Halfacnut · 05/12/2023 17:37

It's much easier to explain a stuck menstrual disc than a potato up your arse (apparently the "explanations" for this in A&E are quite entertaining).

Drs/nurses will not turn a hair, OP.

Yes this.

They'll take it out in a few seconds.

lollo8 · 05/12/2023 17:39

Nearly 40 and I have never heard of a menstrual disc! Just me? Am I clueless?!

Not the point of the thread at all, but hope you get it sorted, OP. I'd just go to A&E, they've seen everything. It could also be that you're tensing up with stress?

FKATondelayo · 05/12/2023 17:42

I have never heard of a menstrual disc either but FGS go to A&E or a walk in or whatever. Don't put more things up there.

I assume your sepsis comment is gallows humour / embarrassment but come on.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 05/12/2023 17:43

Have you any friends who are nurses or doctors? I mean to be honest, stuff like this won't faze any health worker one bit.

The explanation is always 'I fell on it.'

There's a story with one guy (I think in the story it was a vicar) who was 'hanging curtains - in the nude - when he slipped and fell on a peeled potato. Unfortunately he sat on it and it entered rectally.

Nowherenew · 05/12/2023 17:44

Do you have a partner?
They will probably be able to teach it better than you can.

I wouldn’t poke anything sharp up there.

If you need to see a nurse then please don’t be embarrassed, these people do smear tests and all sorts so this would be nothing to them.

Tacotortoise · 05/12/2023 17:44

I've not heard of them either @lollo8 . And after this thread I won't be rushing out to buy one, I had enough trouble with the bloody cap!

Silverstoat · 05/12/2023 17:46

Unless you've also lost a gerbil in there an A&E doctor won't turn a blind eye. Agree with pp that you need to break the suction first and it will eventually come out.

SOBplus · 05/12/2023 17:47

Headband · 05/12/2023 17:08

Same here 😬

I've been that guy for several different women, no big deal, had a laugh about it and moved on.

LylaLee · 05/12/2023 17:48

I had a cup. It felt like the suction would pull out my cervix. That was my last time using one.

There was a disposable one which was really comfy but I couldn't justify the cost and waste.

AInightingale · 05/12/2023 17:49

Some of these suggestions, it will be a coat-hanger next. Get a medical professional to take it out, for the love of God. It's a gynaecological matter, no more embarrassing than a coil becoming dislodged, they will not bat an eyelid.
